laurainlimbo: (film reel)

well the best thing going on here is that it's finally getting warm enough that the snow might melt by the end of the week. I know that when I was living in a place where snow is rare, I missed it. but if you have to miss a day of work, and dig your car out from about 3 or 4 inches of the stuff, and slide around on icy, messy roads, then snow is no longer fun. in fact, when I finally go through my icons, the first I'll toss is the "let it snow" one. it's cute, but I'm ready for spring!

this weekend was just a blur. I ended up working late Friday and then after running around doing errands and getting dinner, I didn't get home until after 7 p.m. I couldn't sleep that night because my downstairs neighbors were whooping and hollering (literally shouting) at all hours, waking me up and making me severely angry. I had to complain to the management, and I guess they've since been reprimanded. I am so so tired of apartment living!! So I woke up late Saturday and then spent half the day waiting to get an oil change on my car. Next weekend I have the lovely task of getting the emissions testing! let's hope it passes the inspection - somehow, miraculously the "check engine" light has gone off. but does that really mean that the engine is good? who knows! My husband did manage to fix the broken automatic window again - though it's temperamental and could stop working anytime. sometimes I think my Nissan is possessed, but it's really quite a good little car.

I watched the best movie on Saturday night - Half Nelson with Ryan Gosling (who is, by the way, nominated for best actor for this role).
Half Nelson is the story of a young man who teaches history at an inner city junior high school - he's also the coach of the girls' basketball team there. He is very good at teaching his students to think for themselves, and to interpret history in a different way (his theme with history is the idea of opposing forces); however, his own life is falling apart because of his drug habit, which is witnessed one night by one of his young students on the basketball team. Because of this secret, they forge a very powerful friendship and come to rely on each other a lot - and both of them end up helping the other to get through some difficult times. It's a very powerful movie, but the thing I liked best (besides the acting), was the fact that it's such a low key movie. there is no violence, hardly any bad language, and only one very subtle sex scene. There is the drug use theme, but it's also understated, and it's not made to be so gratuitous like other drug movies (for example "Spun" or "Requiem for a dream"). That's because the drugs are not the focus of this movie. Rather the focus is the characters and their relationships - the drugs are just something that's pulling them down. those relationships are really strengthened by the phenomenal acting, especially Ryan Gosling. He is such an underrated actor, and I'm thrilled that he is getting recognition for this role. the other actors, unknowns to me, are fantastic too - especially the girl who plays the student, Shareeka Epps. I highly recommend this film - you will not regret it. and watch it before Sunday - Oscar Night!!

that being said, Ryan Gosling is quickly becoming one of my top 5 favorite actors, and hot guys. He is at number three, just behind Jake, and Johnny Depp. the other top two? Cillian Murphy, and Ralph Fiennes. but don't worry - I still love Jensen and Jared:)

and in case you don't know who Ryan is,
