oh my goodness this has been an interesting week. some good, some bad, and some just weird.
the good: as I already said, I got an A on my first quiz in my Contracts Law class.
the bad: everyone in class was arguing with the professor for 30 minutes about the answers. the questions were all true/false, so everyone seemed to think that his/her answer was right.
the weird: the teacher felt bad for everyone (except those of us with A's), so for our second quiz (on Monday), he is going to give the same questions, only slightly altered. and this time it's closed book rather than open book/notes.
so I guess it's a good thing that I will get another A. but the bad thing is that I shouldn't even have to take the quiz again - I already passed!
this teacher is a real big wimp!!
Another good thing with school is that I made a nice friend named Niki. She and I have stuff in common because she lived in Thailand for 10 months as an English teacher. sadly she lives about 40 minutes away from here, but I'm sure we can still get together sometime.
let's see what else is happening...
The weather has been incredibly hot and a bit on the humid side. it's been gorgeous and clear, though, so I can't complain. and I do have air conditioning and fans.
I'll start with the bad:
my work load almost doubled this week since my friend Sarah left. I have been feeling pressure, and it seems that bad attitudes have been rampant which has made for a long, stressful week. I even had a couple people in the office blow up at me: one was the accounting lady who was mad that I had not added a charge to a background that I should have, so the client was not charged some petty amount of $4.00. She was all in my face and telling me what I should NOT have done, even though I wasn't ever told about it beforehand. typical of my office and the way that things are done - you don't learn until you do it wrong and have someone yell at you. the other person who was in my face was the same girl who made me all stressed and upset when I first began working last year. she's just mean and rude and not helpful. I should have just let her comments and attitude roll off of me, and just ignored it; but instead it festered and festered yesterday until I was ready to explode. so last night I came home and drank two glasses of wine and relaxed with an amazing movie which I'll write about later.
good thing though, it's Friday and I can relax! And today was a better day altogether than yesterday was. And we had a company picnic this afternoon, which was both good and weird (or bad depending on your perspective). That's because our picnic area also doubles as a mating ground for the 17-year cicadas! for those of you who aren't living in or near the mid-west and don't know what this is all about, here's a video you can watch - I actually can't figure out how to link to it, but go to this link http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070615/ap_on_sc/gypsy_moths_3, and click on the picture that says "Swarms of Cicadas" = that will take you to a video about them.

today we had a company picnic. we shut down the company at 3 p.m. and went outside on the lawn where there was a catered lunch (hamburgers, hot dogs, typical picnic fare). it was lots of fun, nice to get a couple hours off with pay, and the weather was nice and warm, even with a breeze. But here's the weird and maybe not so good part (depending on how you feel about bugs): the 17-year cicadas are out now, and for some reason, one of the places that they are most prominent is just outside of my office. we have been hearing them and seeing them flying around for about a week now - the picnic was planned over a month ago and no one ever envisioned that we'd be overrun by cicadas. So while we were eating, cicadas were swooping around, sometimes bouncing off of us, sometimes landing in our hair or on our clothes, and landing around our feet. many of my co-workers brought their kids, and some of the children were enjoying the cicadas. the men weren't bothered by them, but lots of the women were screaming and running around like crazy. it was amusing! I had several cicadas land on me, but it didn't bother me. they are fast moving and very big though, so it is more surprising than anything. I forgot my camera so I didn't get pictures, but it was quite an interesting experience. this is a rare occurrence, only in certain parts of the country, and with these bugs, only every 17 years, so I feel privileged. even though I did inadvertently carry one back into the building with me when I went to get my bag to go home. I realized just before I got to the office that it was on my neck, almost inside my collar!! I brushed it off, and sadly it will probably remain inside the building for the entire weekend because I wasn't going to take it back outside.
another experience to add to the archives!!
oh, and finally my movie review. I watched a British movie called "Keeping Mum" with Maggie Smith, Rowan Atkinson (also known as Mr. Bean), Kristin Scott Thomas and Patrick Swayze (who is looking very old). It's a dark comedy about a woman who comes to be a housekeeper for a vicar and his family in a tiny British village. The vicar is too busy to have sex with his wife; bored and lonely, she starts having an affair with her American golf instructor (Patrick Swayze. Their gorgeous 17-year-old daughter isa nymphomaniac, and their young son is being bullied in school. But along comes this wonderful housekeeper who has some dark secrets and ways, but who manages to solve all of their problems in just a few weeks' time! This is absolutely one of the best movies I've seen all year! It was brilliantly written and acted, and laugh out loud funny, especially if you like morbidly dark British humour. It was just what I needed last night to relax after a stressful day. Maggie Smith is one of the best women to ever grace the silver screen and Rowan Atkinson is enjoyable in a surprisingly low-key role that is so different from his usual silly roles like Mr. Bean. He is incredibly talented, as is Kristin Scott thomas who I also adore. The movie was also full of incredibly witty sexual innuendoes, which the British do so brilliantly! Watch this movie!!!!!
and on that note, I'm off to have another glass of wine. have a great weekend!!
