ooh, listing only ten movies is hard, but here's some of my faves:

1. Donnie Darko

In the theater scene, Richard Kelly originally intended to have Donnie and Gretchen going to see C.H.U.D. (1984). However, there were problems with finding out who owned the rights to the movie. Finally, Sam Raimi came to the rescue by allowing Kelly to use and distort footage from The Evil Dead (1981), free of charge.

2. The English Patient

The character name, 'Kip', apparently was Michael Ondaatje's nickname at school. This was a reference to cooking oil stains on his exercise books which reminded the wags among his fellow pupils of kipper fish which were canned in such oil.

3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

The scene where Joel and Clementine watch the circus go through the streets was made up on the spot, as the film crew and cast happened to be working nearby and Michel Gondry decided it could work well in the film. The part where Clementine disappears suddenly is one of Gondry's favorite moments of the film, as Jim Carrey didn't know Kate Winslet was going to disappear and Gondry likes it because Carrey's face appears so saddened. When the sound blanks out in the final film, Carrey is actually saying "Kate?"

4. Garden State

On the commentary track, Natalie Portman admits she had never handled a vinyl record before making this movie. She had to be taught how to start a vintage "record player" properly for the scene in her bedroom.

6. Casablanca

Many of the actors who played the Nazis were in fact German Jews who had escaped from Nazi Germany.

7. Lost in Translation

The movie Bob and Charlotte watch together at the hotel when neither one of them can sleep is Dolce vita, La (1960) La Dolce Vita also has an end scene in which the viewer cannot hear the conversation and this conversation is also between a young woman and an older man.

8. Shaun of the Dead

Night of the Living Dead (1968) director George A. Romero was given a private viewing of the film near his home in Florida. During the scene in which Ed (Nick Frost) yells into the phone, "We're coming to get you, Barbara," Romero was oblivious to the fact it was a direct lift from his film Night of the Living Dead (1968) and only found out later after a phone conversation with director Edgar Wright.

9. Excalibur

John Boorman wanted the story to be the focus of the movie rather than the actors. Therefore, he cast actors that were relatively unknown at the time to American audiences. Among them were Gabriel Byrne (Uther), Patrick Stewart (Leondegrance), Liam Neeson (Gawain), Helen Mirren (Morgana), and Nicholas Clay (Launcelot). Only Nicol Williamson (Merlin) was relatively familiar to American moviegoers.

10. Star Wars (Episode IV from 1977)

George Lucas came up with the name R2-D2 during post-production of American Graffiti (1973). One of the sound crew wanted Lucas to retrieve Reel #2 of the Second Dialogue track. In post-production parlance, this came out as "could you get R2-D2 for me?". Lucas liked the sound of that and noted it down for future use.

11. Halloween (the original)

Halloween was shot in 21 days in the spring of 1978. Made on a budget of $300,000, it became the highest-grossing independent movie ever made at that time.

I stayed home from work today and rested. I'm feeling a bit like a truck ran me over. it was a nice day though - I watched a movie (the Japanese version of "the Grudge 2"), I watched an epi of Smallville, I did laundry, I emailed, and I rested. I also stayed home from class last night and was able to watch the season premiere of "Supernatural." honestly I didn't skip class for the show (though it was tempting) - I really felt like shit and went to bed shortly after Supernatural was over. but Supernatural was enough to make me happy at least for one hour!! it's great to have the winchester boys back in our lives again isn't it??

oh, and finally, I went out tonight and bought my issue of Interview magazine with Jake G on the cover. the pictures inside are heartstoppingly beautiful. if you are a Jake fan, run, don't walk to your nearest magazine stand and buy this!
