I've been looking at pictures online of the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina and it really makes me feel terrible - I can't complain about my meager problems when I see what other people are suffering. since I am not in the states, I haven't been able to see much news coverage of the hurricane - just a little bit last night on the Japanese news. but looking at the pictures today, I realized how bad the damage was. It really makes you think about life and what you value . . .
we've been dealing with a mini-crisis here: my computer's CD/DVD drive has stopped functioning. It doesn't read disks at all! I spent almost an hour last night on a long distance (international rates!) call to Dell's technical support. They were not able to solve the problem - all they could tell me is that its not a hardware issue, but a software issue. And since I didn't purchase technical support for software issues, I can't get help unless I spend a couple hundred dollars for the telephone support plus the call itself. So today Masahiko called Dell Japan to see if they could help. they tried several things, but still its not fixed. So we had to transfer all of my information to Japan, and in one week we can get technical support, or order another CD driver for the computer. I have one bit of advice for anyone looking to buy a computer: Don't Buy A Dell!! When you call their customer service, you will talk to someone either in India or the Philippines, and they don't help at all!
and last night while I was on the phone with Dell, Naoko (the owner of the school where I'm working) called to ask me if I could work this morning. It was already 9:30 p.m. when she called, so when I returned her call after 10 p.m. (after I finished with Dell), I told her that I wouldn't help her. It was too late of notice. I think she was shocked when I said no, but really she has been expecting way too much of me lately. I have bailed her out so many times when she screwed up the schedule and didn't have a teacher. Its her fault that she let all of her regular teachers take a vacation at the same time! Honestly I don't know what she's thinking and I'm wondering if her business will even last another year! But today I just couldn't stress myself out by commuting one hour each way (which ends up being about 2 1/2 to 3 hours total with the driving, waiting for the train, train ride, plus walking to and from the school) just to teach two 40-minute classes. And one of them was the baby class, which I wasn't in the mood for today! It makes me mad that last Friday, when I tried to ask her about my schedule for this week, she said I didn't have to work at all until Saturday. Then all of a sudden she wants me to work with less than 12 hours notice! She also asked me to work tomorrow night, which I agreed to do. But so much for having a week off!!
Today is Masahiko's birthday by the way! Happy birthday to you, Masahiko!
