I don't have much to write today, but I thought I should say something since my last few entries have been so terribly negative. I feel better since I went jogging for the first time Sunday and again this morning. My legs are hating it though!
Even though I don't want to jinx anything by being overly optimistic, I will say that we got our very first call about the school today. A young woman who wants a lesson during the lunch hour. We could eventually charge her for private lessons if that is what she wants (and therefore get more money) but for now, she'll pay for a group lesson and when other students call, we'll get a group. does that make any sense? at any rate, we are feeling more confident about our efforts and we should get more calls. the great thing is that we are not going to go into debt for this business so if it doesn't work out, we won't lose any money. all we have to pay for is some cheap furniture, and the cost of some books and materials, as well as the cost for making the sign and a light to illuminate it at night. Less than $300. I'm sure that the owners of the school where I work in Shizuoka spent several thousand to start their school and I don't even know if they are making a profit.
otherwise, I am still doing my three days a week of work outside the house, and making some lesson plans from home for measly pay. But I like making lessons and I can use them if I get my own students. Win-win situation right?
Oh, and I had to turn down a job offer from a school in Fuji since I am already working three days a week and we are trying to get our own school started. Plus they want me to teach a class of 10 kindergarten kids and then go and teach three hours at their school. too much! Somehow this agency that I had contacted in Tokyo back in June told this school that I have tons of experience teaching kids. How did they get that wrong information? anyway, I declined but told them I would call them again if I need work. It was frustrating since she wouldn't take no for an answer, kept trying to convince me that they could send some bus service to pick me up, etc. - but I don't want to work for a middle man if I am going to teach kindergarten kids. I will go to the schools directly and offer my services since there are lots of kindergartens near here. I might do that if I get bored.
I'm a little leery of the new nomination for the supreme court - this woman, Miers, who has been such a close confidante of Bush and has never been a judge. What are her views on abortion? and why did she give money to pro-life groups as well as giving money to Al Gore's campaign several years ago? what is Bush trying to do? And can someone please explain to me (I'm serious because I don't know) what Bush means when he says that she (this Miers woman) will not legislate from the bench. Huh? maybe I should have paid attention in my government classes in college.
