laurainlimbo: (Hello Kitty)
I didn't realize that I haven't posted since late Thursday night - and its already Saturday night!

Let's see... yesterday I went to Shimizu to teach Noriko and the boys for the second to last time! The last couple of weeks, she hasn't taken me out for a nice lunch - I hope its not because I told her I'm moving=( She still feeds me, but only a boring "bento" box and not some really yummy food like sushi or okonomiyake. But it's okay since she does pay me pretty well for just "chatting" with her in English for an hour or so. Her friend, Fumie, has joined us for the last couple of weeks, and that's been fun too. Noriko said yesterday that when she told her grandson, Juki, that I would be leaving Japan soon, and that we wouldn't have lessons anymore, he started crying! This of course made me feel bad because I have had fun teaching those kids - they are all very cute, and its been a fun experience. But at the same time, I wonder how authentic Juki's tears were - he is a very manipulative kid, and he often acts out and tries to get attention during the lessons. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that his mother is divorced and he is very spoiled! Of all the boys, Juki is the worst behaved - I'm not sure he will really miss my lessons, or me, as much as just the chance to get together with his two friends every Friday!

Anyway, last night after I came home, I didn't do much at all. I caught up on my journals and emails, and then actually went to bed pretty early. This morning I watched "Capote" (a review will follow later), and then cleaned, and then we went out to visit Masahiko's friend Machii-san this afternoon. We were able to meet their friend, Takai-san and her daughter, Mai (the girl I wrote about before who has been having trouble with her father). It turns out that Mai has been staying with Machii-san and his family, and is still not going to school (but she will start again in April). And the latest development is that because of all of this trouble, Takai-san is going to divorce her husband and have to move out of the house with both kids, Mai, and the younger brother (who is just 14 and in junior high school). Its really a bad situation - and also we learned that Mai has been having trouble sleeping because she is having bad nightmares, which are getting worse each time she goes to sleep. The good thing, though, is that Machii-san (who is a monk) and his wife are really helping Mai so much. they are letting her stay at their home (and they really don't have much money), they are offering to take her to school every day, and also counseling her and helping her deal with this hard time. It makes me feel so good to see people helping their friends when they are in need. And we felt good because we were able to buy dinner for everyone tonight - which really was helpful for them!

Tomorrow we were going to go back to the beach again with the same family from last Sunday, but the plans were canceled because the waves are going to be too big (so its too dangerous for Masahiko to go surfing). So I don't know what is planned tomorrow...if its nice we might go somewhere close by! also, I'm planning to write Chapter 2 in my Guide to Japan... so stay tuned!

And now, if you are interested: my review of 'Capote' )
