I don't have much time, as I'm on my way to Saitama this morning to visit my friends', the Yoshinos, for a couple of days. But I wanted to at least update a bit on things here. Time is quickly passing, and I'll soon be on my way back to America - just five days from today! It's been just over a year since I came here (April 20, 2005), and it's been a very interesting year. Once I get settled down into my regular routine in Chicago, I'll have more time to reflect on the whole experience. Now, I'm just busy trying to get everything all packed and ready to go.
Let's see... two days ago, Wednesday, I went out in the afternoon to meet my friend Naomi (Nao). We had plans to visit our friend Naomi(Sue) in the hospital - she just delivered her baby last week. We first went shopping so I could buy a little baby gift (pooh stuffed animal and pooh socks), and then went to pick up Sue's mother (who still lives at the apartment building in Kambara where I spent two years from 1998 to 2000.) I hadn't seen her in six years, so it was fun to see her again! She has been going every day to the hospital to meet Sue (an hour and a half trip without a car - train and bus), since last week!
When we got the hospital, Sue was sleeping - it has been a hard week for her since she delivered the baby by C-section and she has to feed the baby seven times a day now. We chatted for awhile and then we were able to see the new baby girl, Megumi, for just a few minutes. Naomi had to go into the baby room and show her to us through the window - visitors aren't allowed since the babies are so new. The baby is so tiny and cute - I took photos but don't have them yet.
After the hospital, we took Sue's mother home and then went to the cheap Chinese restaurant for dinner - it was early so I called Masahiko to meet us. We were there for a couple hours and then Masahiko and I went to his friend, Machi-san's house where I chatted with Takai-san's daughter, Mai (who is 17 and a senior in high school) about her English class. Of course we chatted in Japanese (she's apparently not learning much English conversation)... We went home at 11 p.m. so I was pretty tired!
Thursday I had to spend the morning repacking my last box to mail to the U.S. and preparing my last two lessons. Hiromi came at 1 p.m. and we did a fun lesson of American idioms (pulling my leg, I smell a rat, don't let the cat out of the bag, etc). Then after her lesson we went to the post office to mail my box, and then I had to prepare the rest of the kids' lesson. I was sad to say goodbye to these kids - they are both 10 years old, so quiet and sweet, and the best students! I took a photo of us together and will post it later.
Now, I'm leaving in just an hour to visit my friends north of Tokyo. It will be my last chance to ride the trains in Japan for awhile, so I plan to take notes of all of my reflections so I can write about it later. (and maybe I'll try to shoot a few photos)...
I won't be online for two days, so I'll be back in touch with everyone briefly when I return - before I get on the plane on Tuesday.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!!
