Can anyone recommend any good books (fiction or non-fiction/history) about the Arthurian Legends?

I started watching the new season of BBC's Merlin and they re-introduced the character of Mordred (who is amazingly cast in this show - gorgeous eyes and so bewitching!). I'm fascinated by these stories, and there have been so many interpretations.

I know that BBC's show, as awesome as it is (I love it so far this season!!), takes pretty big liberties with the characters and their relationships. In my favorite movie about the Arthur legends, "Excalibur", Arthur is just a baby being raised by Merlin, and Morgana is Mordred's mother (from an incestuous relationship with Arthur, her half-brother). I like the way Merlin re-invents the stories and the characters, but I'm also very intrigued by the old legends as they were originally told.

I'm more interested in less fictional works, such as perhaps "L'Morte D'Arthur" (by Sir Thomas Mallory), but I'm also looking for other books that might be more easy to read, written in more modern language.

Any suggestions?
