not quite what I'd expect

I know my company means well. Yet I wonder who thinks this stuff up:

We just got an email from the office administrator, saying that in honor of Valentine's Day, they are hosting a Hot Dog Lunch for us tomorrow.

Hot Dogs and Valentine's Day - and just how do these go together? my mind is only thinking dirty things... Shut up!! wouldn't it be more appropriate to have cake or something?

and what about people who don't like hot dogs? or who might be vegetarian?

seriously someone needs to rethink the office gimmicks and parties in our office. They recently had an "Employee Appreciation Day" on which they gave us sweet rolls in the morning and Baker's Square pie in the afternoon. I'm not complaining about pie, I was very happy to have my slice of French Silk (chocolate cream that's to die for)... but it's the other "appreciation" that I'm questioning. Rather than giving everyone a little gift or lunch, they just did random drawings throughout the day for little "prizes" (anything from a Border's gift certificate to a "Sopranos" Trivia Game). Prizes are nice - for the people whose names were drawn. I, of course, did not get one single prize! the same thing happened at Christmas time when they did the random drawings all day - my name was never called.
How can people feel appreciated when they don't get anything - it makes you feel less than appreciated, really.

but I'll try not to be cynical and enjoy my hot dog tomorrow - with extra catsup (or is it ketchup?)

Ick, I wouldn't be happy to be provided with hot dogs, free or otherwise, unless they are going to be eaten far from the office so the smell didn't hang around all afternoon and I then could eat my own lunch and not worry about it!

Yeah, I don't really see the connection with valentine's day, I'd imagine cookies with pink icing in heart shapes or something like that would be more appropriate!

Anyway, sounds like they are doing their best to make their employees feel appreciated, which is more than we get, though I'd rather have a pay rise than the money be wasted on too many gimmicks (2 weeks till my delayed pay rise, back dated to June!!)

Hmm. Sounds kind of cute, but I think everyone should be appreciated. They have to realize that some people aren't lucky - me included!

well, it's the activity as a whole that shows that they care. if someone's name doesnt get called, well, that's chance and how all drawings work. it's the spirit, not the actual payoff.

I heard someone today say they were planning to eat hot dogs tomorrow. Of course hot dogs and Valentines Day go together! It's like peanut butter and pickles!

VanElla used to do those random drawings for vacation weekends, etc. I always thought that was lame too. One person is happy, and everyone else is annoyed. Way to boost morale.

I think my boss's gift for Valentine's Day is by giving us Monday off :) I'd take that over hot dogs. But you have fun with those :)

I guess it's the thought that counts? But I agree, hot dogs are a funny choice for valentine's day!

Weird doesn't even begin to cover it.
