Brothers

I can't wait to see this movie

and I find it a bit ironic (or not?), however, that it is being released just after Obama's announcement to send more troops over to Afghanistan.

Still I can't wait to see this movie - with Jake Gyllenhaal (who I thought I'd never see in a movie again), Tobey Maguire, and Natalie Portman, and directed by Jim Sheridan, it will be amazing!

I'm a little skittish about seeing this film (even though I love Natalie Portman). Lemme know what you think of the film.

That movie looks SO intense! Wow.

The movie looks really good, hope it is as good as the trailers, and that you get to see it soon

I used to be a bigger Jake fan than I am now but I hope to see it at the theater though.

I didn't even realize this was a remake - I looked it up and I guess the original film was Danish. Until I saw the trailer, I didn't know what the movie was about - I've been waiting for years for this film to come out - I knew a long time ago that Jake and Tobey would be playing brothers in a movie. I've always been a big fan of Jake Gyllenhaal.

I'm a bit uneasy about the subject matter too - I agree with you about Hollywood's myopic view of war, and this idea has been done before. But under the direction of Sheridan, and with this cast, it should be worth a look.

yes you and I originally bonded over Jakey:) I've just missed him in films, and I'm looking forward to this for him and Tobey. I'll miss this in the theater since I'm going to Japan. Funny, last time I was in Japan, I missed Brokeback Mountain in the theater, and this time I'll miss Brothers. weird.

I hope it's good too - it should be. I'll miss it in the theater here since I'm going to Japan, but maybe I'll catch it on DVD.

do you mean skittish about the subject matter? I just realized that this film is a remake of a Swedish film, but it is ironic about the timing of it's release. I know it will be a very dark and depressing film, but I just love this cast. unfortunately, I won't be able to see it soon since I'm leaving the country next week and likely it won't be released in Japan right away.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
yes it really does!

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
oops I meant that the original film was Danish, not Swedish.

Well, I dunno. It's the holiday season and I think I'm looking for something more upbeat. So I guess I am a little skittish about the subject matter. It looks and feels dark but has been getting good reviews. It's kind of the reason why I've also stayed away from The Road as well.

Oooh, looks good.

Not sure I'd go to the cinema to see it though. I like my films more vacuous, superficial and happy. Lol.

I am so excited for this as well, excellent casting.

Hi, :)

Did you get my card yet? I wanted to make sure it got to you before you left.. so I sent it out Saturday. Just fyi.

I wanted it to be a surprise.. but then I figured I should warn you to look out, as I dont know who grabs the mail at your house.

Ok, bye, :D

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi - yes I did get your card!! and it was a surprise - a wonderful one! Thank you so so much - it's my first Christmas card (and only one so far) and I was so happy to get it! I'm sorry I didn't let you know earlier - I was going to email you, and this week just got so busy with all my preparations to leave the country next week. So thanks again!!!

*big hugs*
and sorry I didn't get back to you with links for SPN - I'll try to do that this weekend:)

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you about upbeat films being more enjoyable. In fact, I wouldn't be interested in Brothers if it weren't for the cast and the director. I just read about The Road this morning - I love Viggo Mortensen, but that subject matter is even more grave than Brothers. Cormac McCarthy sure does write dark stuff.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember you saying that about films - and I agree that feel-good films are much more satisfying, but sometimes the serious films are important too. to be honest, I might not even want to see this film if it weren't for the actors in it. I love them:)

[identity profile] serenelystrange.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
:) Dont worry about not emailing! I'm just glad you got the card before leaving.

And no problem with SPN, I know you're super ridiculously busy, :D *hugs*

I know you're right. We should learn from films as well as be entertained by them. I'm just not good at dealing with emotional scenes. Lol. I'm a wuss!

[identity profile] kookymorgan.livejournal.com 2009-12-04 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly no one I know would enjoy this, yes the subject matter is dark, but I have found all the actors in previous films etc to be so compelling when it comes to stuff like this, Sherridan is also brilliant so I really hope we get to see this in the UK!

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-12-04 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
it's the main reason I want to see it. I've missed Jake, and Tobey is always so good.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-12-04 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
the actors are all so good, and Sheridan is indeed brilliant. In America was such a fantastic film, as were his others with Daniel Day Lewis years ago. I don't think I'll be able to see this in the theater since I'm leaving for Japan, and this isn't the type of movie to make money over there, sadly.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-12-04 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm happy to take my one x-mas card with me to Japan:)

I sent you some links - let me know if they're ok...

*hugs*

Tobey Maguire is a great actor - I recommend watching him in Cider House Rules (which also stars Michael Caine), and in The Ice Storm , with Kevin Cline and Sigourney Weaver and directed by Ang Lee. Most people only associate Tobey with Spiderman, so I'm happy he's getting a chance to prove his acting ability.

sadly I can't see this in the theater even if I wanted to. I'm leaving the states before it comes to my town, and it won't be coming to Japan any time soon (it's not the type of movie to make money in Japan), so I'll be finding a download or getting the DVD next year.
