Yes, it's snowing again here. And I'm not happy about it. the forecast said "freezing rain", which it actually was doing last night. But right now, as I'm typing this, quite a lot of snow is coming down, fluffy, white and foreboding. I don't want another snow day - I need to work, and I hope this stuff stops before 8 a.m tomorrow.
So, tonight's the Oscars, and this is probably the first year that I've seen less than half of the movies that are nominated. Yesterday I did drive to a theatre about 30 minutes away, by myself, to see Babel with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. It's one of the films nominated for best picture, and it was phenomenal! It's a story about the universality of a single event, the way that tragedy, loss and also hope can be global. I was very impressed by all of the acting, and with the power and intensity of the four interconnected stories (it takes place simultaneously in Morocco, Mexico and Japan). The Japanese actress, Rinko Kikuchi, was probably the most impressive since she was playing a deaf mute and was able to give a more powerful performance without words than many of the talking roles I've seen. Oh, and Gael Garcia Bernal is also in this movie, as well as the Japanese actor from Shall We Dance , Koji Yakusho. I realized after I talked to my sister that the director is the same who made 21 Grams with Sean Penn and Naomi Watts, which was also extremely powerful. I highly recommend watching Babel , but just be warned that it is extremely emotional, and you'll need to be alone for awhile after watching it. I needed a corner to just go and cry.
I didn't mind going by myself to the movie - I've done that about four other times in my life. The only thing I minded was that the theater was packed, mostly full of old couples, and it was probably the longest, most excrutiating 15 minutes waiting for that movie to start. I had to listen to the ridiculous drone of the old people around me, and I heard the funniest thing. This very loud woman was talking to her friend about the movies and directors that are nominated for the Academy awards. She started talking about how Martin Scorsese was nominated for "The Departed" and that he hadn't ever won an award before (she said that about 10 times) - and in trying to tell her friend who Scorsese is, she said this: "you know, he's the guy that makes all THOSE movies. He made all of 'the Godfather' movies." !!!!!!
Scorsese made all the Godfather movies? Really? I think he better have a talk with Francis Ford Coppola then, don't you think?
It took all the power in the world for me to NOT turn around and say something. And after she made this amazing revelation, some man actually agreed with her, and said "OH, yea, you're right."
Ah, ignorance sure must be bliss. and that must be why I'm so unhappy!
and back to the Academy Awards, even though I know it's not really a contest of who's the BEST in film, I do have my hopes set on certain victories: Babel for best picture; Ryan Gosling (or Forest Whitaker) for best actor; Kate Winslet for best actress; Rinko Kikuchi for best supporting actress; and Eddie Murphy or Djimon Hounsou for best supporting actor. That isn't what or who will win, but it's my hopes!

I haven't been feeling the best and things are ... crappy, but I'm not really all that bad, just bummed out ya know?
I went swimming tonight with Matthew for two hours though and although I'm sure my body will pay for it tomorrow, but I had a lot of fun with him and I'm feeling better:) Thanks for thinking of me. You're such a sweet person.*hugs*

swimming is great exercise - that's great you could do that!
I always think of my friends. it's my nature!

I love this story! And, perversely, I now love eavesdropping on these conversations.
I've been in this same situation many times but I've made the mistake of correcting someone twice. In both situations, I realized after the fact that the person did not care about being right, but DID care about getting attention and arguing in public with strangers. I totally regretted opening my mouth!
Now I just giggle quietly.

omg, Will Ferrell and Jack Black are awesome - did you see what Jack Black did last year? I loves both of them so much! but yes, the makeup award was a weird choice- something like animation or song would have been better:)

I've gone to a movie by myself too. But both times, i felt awkward and a little self-conscious. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie.
How are things? *hugs*
(no subject)
yea it's a little awkward to go to a movie alone but I don't mind - it's good once the movie starts since you're just watching anyway and not talking:)
things are going okay - just tired of my job and tired of winter. but I'm happy:)

OMG. That is one of my pet peeves in the theater. O.O Please. At least whisper? LOL! MY worst? When couples come in with little ones-who clearly shouldn't be there, but lack of sitter made them be present. Ughh. And the crying baby who wails out of control for ages-ruining the movie because you just cannot concentrate for squat. I love kids-you know that-but for the love of God-stay home if you can't get a sitter? One time in all the years have I ever seen a mom with wailing baby ejected from the theater. We all missed a good portion of the film-and someone must have finally had enough and went to the usher and complained. This child was screaming for the best part of an hour! Non-stop! So we got to see the last 30 minutes of the show-but by then we were all so confused it didn't matter. That really bothered me. And no refund either-or an allowance to see it again to make up for it. Yeah. I'm not bitter. Much. LOL!
One of my theater experience's? We saw Stealth(no comment). My sister and I went to see it in the next town over. The theater was fairly old. so as we're watching? This huge ass chunck of the ceiling drops down onto one of the chairs a row over from us(and when I say huge? It was bigger than the chair!)! Umm, scared spitless? And thank god there was nobody sitting there at the time! We complained to the usher and his reply? Oh yeah-heee, that happens sometimes. *Pauses* HUH?! Someone coulda gotten hurt really bad and that's it? Oopsy? And wow-this went off topic a bit-lmao! But wanted to stop and say hey too! Heheheheee!

well to be honest I don't go to the theater a lot these days - it's a hassle and it's expensive (though this movie was only $2.00 - yay!). I watch a lot of DVD rentals and movies on tv.
and i agree that it's hard to see movies because of rude people who chat or bring babies or bring noisy food with plastic wrappers or they are just kicking my chair or something. when I went to see the English Patient years ago *one of my favorites* there were some old people who couldn't hear well and the woman kept asking the man what was going on - it ruined the experience for me. when I went to see the Blair Witch Project (soso scary!), people were screaming at every scary scene, and yelling at the screen - but it was frankly more annoying than anything.
anyway, thanks for your comment - *hugs* hope you are well:)

Well, we try to? But sometimes as you know-real life gets in the way of the best laid plans! But we do try-and we sometimes hit the 2 dollar theater and see stuff we missed earlier ;-)
I think a good reason I go to so few of the new ovies is because i get so irated with the others who are less considerate of others there. I really do. Maybe it's a side effect of getting older for me-but I doubt it. I felt the same way at 18 as I do at 40. Be respectful-it's all I ask! ;-)

yea it's hard to go out to movies when we get so spoiled watching movies at home. remember drive-ins? those were the days...

Oh man. Drive-ins...yeah. Very much so! We had one in the area until maybe 10 years ago? Sad to see it go. Those were the days! ;-)
