5 days in... and counting
I feel like I should post more often - it's just that I don't feel like I've much to say that I haven't already said. Not much is happening these day really. I have sort of started my job search again, which is stressful and depressing. I hate job hunting because it just makes me feel so inferior. sometimes I wish I would have just stuck with teaching - by now I might have had enough experience to get an actual full time job. But who knows... we are always faced with decisions in life, and sometimes perhaps we make a wrong decision, or choose a path or direction that isn't right. What then do we do? Do we regret it and ultimately give up hope, or do we just try to learn from it? Whenever I look for a job, or try a new career path (like I'm doing with the paralegal thing), it makes me feel like I'm under a microscope - and perhaps I don't like seeing myself the way others do. Does that make sense? Probably not - I'm probably just rambling... Anyway, I do need to really focus on finding a job - not just for more money, but for my own mental and physical health. I go to work and I get headaches. That can't be good.
Luckily for the next few weeks I do have more free time - before school begins on January 23rd. I started a new knitting project (a muffler to match my cute green hat) - i'm not sure if I'm happy with it though - the color scheme I chose looks somewhat like an easter basket! I'm reading "The Golden Compass" - though I haven't gotten very far because I'm always too tired when I sit to read. Last night, for example, I was going to read but I fell asleep by 10 p.m. how boring is my life?! I've watched a couple movies lately: Next and Fracture .
Next with Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore and Jessica Biel was pretty uninteresting and forgettable. It's (loosely I'm sure) based on a story by Phillip K. Dick called "The Golden Man" - so that means it had potential. Phillip K. Dick brought us Blade Runner and A Scanner Darkly, both of which had very good film adaptations. But sadly, this film really was disjointed and difficult to follow, and also very slow (in the beginning). It's about a Las Vegas magician who has the ability to see five minutes into the future (or in the case of one this movie more like 5 hours or days??), and who is asked by the FBI to help stop a nuclear attack on L.A. - by Russians!? (I didn't realize that the Russians were still our enemies). The problem is that too much time was focused on the relationship between Nic Cage and Jessica Biel's characters, and not enough time was spent explaining why these russians want to nuke LA! And the way the movie was directed, this ability that Nic Cage's character has to see into the future was made to seem incredibly implausible, rather than intriguing. If done more artistically, the movie might have been interesting. The acting wasn't good either - which I think had more to do with the direction than the actors. Julianne Moore's character was stiff and shallow - and she is usually so good! Nic was just okay - is it just me, but is his acting starting to get boring?
The other movie, Fracture was much more interesting for me, especially since it was like a review of my introduction to law class. It stars Anthony Hopkins as a man who is accused of shooting his wife, and Ryan Gosling as the assistant district attorney who is assigned to prosecute the attempted murder case against him. Anthony Hopkins is complex and intense as usual, and his character somewhat resembles Hannibal Lecter, though a little less psychotic. He's calculating, smart, and always a step ahead of everyone. Ryan's character is also complex; he's a district attorney with one foot out of the door and on his way to a position with big corporate firm. He takes the case thinking it's open and shut- but it turns out to be unwinnable, and it becomes his obsession to put Anthony's character behind bars - without any evidence to convict. The two main actors play against each other well, and the movie also stars David Straithairn (as the DA) and an actress named Rosamund Pike (I've never seen but she's beautiful) as Ryan's love interest. The film was obviously written by someone who finished at least the first year of law school as it was full of basic legal terms like double jeapardy, fruit of the poisonous tree, and references to health care proxy, etc. all stuff I learned in my classes this last term. Although I preferred Ryan's more thoughful characters in "Half Nelson" and "The Notebook", I did think he shined in this film, and he is definitely a rising star. Not to mention extremely cute!
One more thing - if you remember, I mentioned that my cat was sick a couple weeks ago - he couldn't poop. He's doing much better, no thanks to that stupid vet who took my money but didn't even help my cat. That vet never even suggested that my cat might have been throwing up because he was constipated - instead he took x-rays which didn't show anything. Of course not! And he never suggested anything for the cat's diet to help the situation. My husband and I have nursed Leo with simple enemas, lots of water, and a diet of more canned food and less dry. But also I bought some native american herbal medicine from an online site called Native Remedies (the pet site is Pet Alive), it's like metamucil for cats. it's helped so far! I'm not going back to that vet again - and I'm considering writing a letter of complaint to that office.
It's getting late so off I go. I hope everyone's new year is going great so far!

I'm glad Leo is doing better. That stupid Vet. I'm so glad I didn't spend thousands of dollars on the eye surgery for my cat.
Enjoy the extra time you have until school starts again.

thanks so much for the encouragement though - it's really appreciated!!
yes, that stupid vet took so much of my money. I was going to write them a letter but haven't had the time (or energy). maybe it's not worth it.
I'm truly enjoying the extra free time except for my job hunting. I'm going to washington next thursday for about five days. if it were longer, i'd try to meet you. we will meet someday for sure!!
*hugs*

Thats is really naughty of the vet! Are your vet bills as expensive as ours over here, I tell ya Im in the wrong job!
We have a vet that is into herbal stuff, problem is it has never helped our doggie but has cost the earth!!
*shakesfist*

yes, vet bills are enormously expensive here - if I wanted to actually do blood work and see what's really wrong with Leo, it would be close to thousands of dollars!! too much!
*hugs* hope you are well!!

poor baby, I wish I could give him hugs:( Glad to hear he's doing better tho.
I think for the most part, even when we regret something, there's always something to take from it and learn from.
I miss you so much Laura! I've become a horrible friend and not kept in touch very much:( I feel like an ass. I know you won't go on facebook, do you ever use msn at all?

I agree, regrets are no good but we do learn from everything - hopefully anyway - that's life! Yes, Leo was a bit under the weather. I will give Leo hugs for you - and kisses!! he's doing a bit better - he was all stopped up because of too much hair. and the vet didn't help at all.
and you're not ahorrible friend at all - just caught up with life as we all are! it's important that we stay in touch, even if it's just every couple months or so. it means a lot you stopped by!!
*hugs tight*

I hope you gave that vet a word or two! I get really annoyed with some vets sometimes - they're too busy thinking they know everything to actually pay enough attention sometimes.

I know - I need to say something even in a letter to that vet. the doctor wasn't a very nice person. he was really too egotistical. it's not about you dude it's about the animals!
