Random stuff on a Sunday

Greetings - I hope all of you who celebrated Easter had a wonderful day full of bunnies and chocolate. I didn't get any chocolate easter bunnies, but I did get a wonderful e-card from [personal profile] dawnie1970 - thanks!!!!

I thought I'd do a proper post today. It's been so long since I have written anything really resembling an update, and I've so much to write about. This may turn out to be a very random, very long-winded post, so bear with me.

Friday, the Chicago area was hit with a wonderful "welcome to Spring" mini (and very slushy, wet) snowstorm. I say mini because it dumped and dumped for hours from early Friday until early Saturday, probably a good 3-5 inches where I live and work; but almost all of the snow had melted by late Saturday afternoon. Saturday was gloriously sunny and even, dare I say, warm (well, not warm for you folks in warmer climates like Florida and California, but warm for us here in the midwest). Today was very nice too. But to back up a bit, on Thursday, the day before our glorious storm, and just in time for colder temps, the heater on my car decided that it wouldn't work properly - it only worked when I put it on the highest setting. So Friday morning I dragged my grouchy self out of bed at 6 a.m. and drove through the heavily falling snow to my mechanic's - they were supposed to be open at 7:30, but the guys were both late. Bad traffic I guess. They arrived at 7:45, and thankfully got the part, and I was on my way to work by 9 a.m - with a working heater - yay! The snow fell and fell all day, and work was boring and slow; I stopped on the way home for Indian food and red wine, and had a nice night watching Hot Fuzz and sleeping early.

oh and by the way, Hot Fuzz is quite a funny movie - not as perfectly clever and hilarious as Shawn of the Dead , the other venture by the same directing and acting team, but still entertaining. I was a bit surprised when it totally changed it's direction midway through and became a complete bloodbath (with some quite comically gruesome decapitations too); it started out so humble and quiet, and then ended with quite a bang. I wish I could watch it again because I missed quite a bit of dialogue (those darn British accents - LOL), and it did have some very laugh out loud scenes that I want to see again. I'm looking forward to Simon Pegg in his new movie (directed by David Schwimmer of Friends), called Run Fatboy Run - and I just read that Simon Pegg is going to play Scotty in the Star Trek movie! Boy that's going to be quite the cast, with Zachary Quinto playing Spock and Eric Bana (who cares what he plays, we can just look at him, which is just FINE), and Winona Ryder, and even Leonard Nimoy!

But I digressed - I did warn you that my post would be random like this.
anyway, after the snowstorm, things settled down. And this is what it looked like at our apartment complex on Saturday morning

Pretty huh?

oh but it's not so pretty after it melts and leaves black slush and piles of dirty snow around which you need to walk to get to your car. fun stuff. when is summer coming?

okay what else is going on...

last week I had my "review" at work with my new "supervisor." She's about 25 years old, a well-known party girl who is very involved with a guy in the criminal department (oh, office romances), and is a total twit. How did she become my supervisor? Maybe I can write about it on another day, but suffice to say, it's very silly to report to her, and to have her reviewing my performance when she can't even spell the names of our clients. Seriously! But the review itself was painless. Of course they think that my work is fantastic, and they couldn't survive without me, and they want me to do lots of projects and take on more responsibility. Why then are they giving me only a 3 percent raise? I guess I can be happy for any raise, but I'm still not earning what I deserve with my experience and my education. My job is a joke, but given the economy and how difficult it is to find another, I'll stick with it for a while, until I have more ability to search for something in the legal field.

I got so organized this weekend, getting my tax forms ready to mail (evil IRS!!!), getting my passport form filled out (passport expires next month and who knows when I'll travel again), getting my apartment cleaned and all my clothes washed, and even buying new clothes at Old Navy (well three new shirts, which were all dirt cheap!). today I met my friend Sarah for lunch at Houlihan's - I ate way way too much including a banana bread pudding for dessert, had a yummy strawberry and basil lemonade (with gin), and then bought two books at Border's (both on sale) - one by my favorite author Paolo Coelho called "The Devil and Miss Prym" and one by Haruki Murakami called "Kafka on the Shore" which is supposed to be amazing (and disturbing).

My college is on Spring Break this week, so no class tomorrow. I do have an assignment to email my teacher, and another due next week, so it's not a real break. But it's nice to have a night off. We have a major project due at the end of the semester, which will involve visiting the law libraries of a big law school downtown (our library is really limited), so that will begin after the break. I'm a bit anxious about it, but I think I'll do fine. Writing is easy for me. But it's the research that takes time and skill. Wish me luck!

I've been watching lots of movies lately and not writing about them. I watched David Lynch's Inland Empire about a month ago and was going to write about it so that [profile] galactic_jack could help me to interpret it's meanings. But I got so busy and distracted that I never did write about it. I'm so lazy! I still plan to write about it though - and I want to write my feelings about No Country for Old Men, Rendition, Reign Over Me, and The Simpson's Movie , all of which I enjoyed to some extent. Anyone interested in movie reviews, tune in tomorrow (if I'm that organized)...

Finally I have some music recommendations: Radiohead's "In Rainbows" (which I know is quite old by now) is amazing!! and Herbie Hancock's tribute to Joni Mitchell "The River: The Joni Letters" is a work of art. Great stuff.

well that's about it. I've got to go and call my sister, do my assignment, and sleep.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2008-03-25 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Dawnie is super sweet - I love her!!

so is pretty, but don't be jealous. we've had it non-stop since about December, and I'm so so ready for warm and sun! spring snowstorms in the midwest are normal. when I was a child growing up in Colorado, we had snow on my birthday - my birthday is may 29th! crazy huh??

thanks for the good luck and the hugs and all!!

*hugs* back!!

[identity profile] kookymorgan.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
oohh its snowing here too! Although so far not settling, cuz we have had rain and sun, then sleet then hail stones then sun YIKES! Wish it would make its mind up!
Pretty pictures!

AHH I love all of the Simon Pegg, Edgar wright stuff, Hot Fuzz just makes me laugh so much and I LOVE the gore in it, remember Shawn was quite gory in places and run fat boy run is actually not bad!!
So enjoy that when you see it!

How do these people get these positions? Licking up to the boss in cases at my place of work *rollseyes*..

Hope you have a nice rest for the remainder of the holiday!

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
snowing there too? wow spring is sure not ready to begin is it? sleet too? I'm sorry! I hope your weather improves soon!

Simon Pegg is great! I did really like the gore in "Hot Fuzz" - I was just surprised because I had no idea it was coming. the movie started out so seriously, and then it became so comically macabre. that's exactly my kind of movie so I really liked it. But Shaun of the Dead was just made of awesome!!

I'd love to know how certain people get into management positions - sucking up and brownnosing, and lots of bullshit, me thinks!!
LOL!!

hope your holiday was lovely too!

*huggles* Welcome hon!

Oh my, those pictures look like January, not March! Winter is evil for holding on so hard!

How is your sister doing?

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
winter is holding on - but I think it's over soon - *crosses fingers*

how is my sister doing? Hmmmm that's a good question. I haven't spoken to her in weeks. I left her three voice mails and no call back. She's super busy being a mom, but I figured now that she's quit her job, and has more free time, we'd talk more. it's the opposite. It makes me sad. I don't know why she doesn't want to talk to me.

*hugs*

[identity profile] serialbathera.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
the pictures are so pretty...I love snow when it is so pretty and undisturbed like that.

sorry your boss is an idiot ::huggles::

good luck with everything love :hugs::

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
yes that's the key -w hen it's all undisturbed it's peaceful. But when snow has been on the ground awhile, and it's either slushy or icy and dirty, it's no fun!

yes the boss is an idiot - but it's a job and I'm thankful to have it!

*Hugs
how's your job by the way?

[identity profile] serialbathera.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
true, it is always so pretty then...evil dirty snow sucks...

true, true, especially considering how hard it is to find a job anywhere.

:;hugs::

My job is going well hon :) Thanks for asking

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2008-04-06 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad the job is going well!!

*hugs*

We got way too much chocolate, and candy yesterday-lol. But good to stash away when you need that fix! *G*
You were definately organized-way more than I was! Wow! I am good most of the time but this weekend I was lucky if I remembered to cook the two side dishes I was asked to make for our family get tother-lol!
Movies-oh man. I haven't seen any new movies-last night my sister foisted the remake of Nancy Drew on us-when we were nealy comatose from the meal and couldn't say no fast enough. ugh. I zoned out with Boo on my lap-lol! I want to see good films again ;-(
*Hugs*

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't have ANY cander on Easter - can you believe it? I wanted some but was holding back - I did have dessert with lunch though - very yummy!

I was super organized for a change - it was a nice feeling. I've had all this tax crap hanging over my head - once it's all done, I'll be able to relax so much more!

oh you should watch movies, but I know it's hard sometimes. i went about two months without watching hardly any. I'm back at it again though and it's fun:)

*Hugs*

[identity profile] moondropz.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
You know-I didn't either? I had some the next day but not alot? We're good!!!!
I am better organized most days-I think this past weekend i was just really blah/tired? But normally I can get alot done. The tax thing is done-thank god-lol.
Movies-I watch on my dvd player when I can? But going to see them-it's been months. I want to see new ones but just don't seem to have as much time as I used to. That makes me sad -(
*Hugs*

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2008-03-30 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
oh I've been watching movies on DVD too but not in theater. the last m ovie I saw in the theater was Harry Potter last summer. I just don't go anymore. it's sad! too expensive and too much time.

*hugs*

[identity profile] moondropz.livejournal.com 2008-03-30 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah same here. sadly it's priced itself out of my budget most weekends. I saw National Treasure part two-and I can't recall when it was? November? But everything else is dvd/rental ;-P
*Hugs*

I spent Easter with my grandmother. It was nice and quiet. I bought a ham from the honey baked ham store and I actually made one of the sidedishes (which turned out decent) and the other came from a can. :) My parents have been on vacation and I have been holding down the fort and it has been nice.

Yay for Spring Break. It's that time of year to catch up on movies and music. Thanks for the recs. I am gonna check out that Herbie Hancock one.

Yay for getting a good review at work. Boo for the smallness of the raise. I am with you on the economy front - I am keeping an eye out but staying at my current job.

*BIG HUG*
Michelle

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
your Easter sounds like it was nice. the Herbie Hancock is great - very relaxing. especially if you like Joni Mitchell.

oh and for movies, I saw Rendition. Did you like that movie? I thought it was interesting, but the ending was a bit rushed and not realistic, and Jake was not really dynamic. when is his next movie coming out?

it's such a crazy time with the economy, I'm j ust thankful for a job right now. I don't really hate my job as much anymore either - it's just the pay could be better. oh well!

*big hugs back*
thanks for stopping by!!

[identity profile] phantomsgyrl.livejournal.com 2008-03-28 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't care for 'Rendition' at all. I personally thought it was Jake's weakest performance to date. I didn't care for any of the characters and IMO I have never cared for Reese Witherspoon's acting.
I don't know when his next movie is coming out. When I hear something I will let you know.

Michelle

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2008-03-30 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you about Jake in Rendition. he wasn't that interesting - though he was cute!

I actually though that Reese was pretty good in Rendition, and she was great in Walk the Line.

Jake should totally do another movie - we're forgetting about him!

I've been back and forth with In Rainbows. Some people say it's awesome, some say it isn't as good as their previous stuff. Hot Fuzz is/was great stuff. I enjoyed it.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2008-03-30 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
well I've been a fan of Radiohead for a long time - their earliest two Cd's are my favorites, of course. and I liked Kid A quite a bit. some of their stuff after that got a bit weird, so this was more like going back to earlier stuff for them. maybe that's why some people liked it so much. there are about 7 or 8 songs I really love on In Rainbows, the rest are really good but not fantastic.

I want to watch Hot Fuzz again - it's worth a second viewing!
