I've been following the stories for quite awhile about Joaquin Phoenix and his decision to quit acting and become a rap singer. But his bizarre behavior on the David Letterman show last night has me really puzzled. If you haven't already heard, Joaquin went onto Letterman with a full beard, speaking in monosyllables, hardly laughing, chewing gum, and looking very dazed and confused (or perhaps stoned?). I'm wondering if this is for real, or if he's really just giving his "last great performance." I couldn't get the whole interview on You Tube because of copyright issues, but here's about 5 minutes from The Huffington Post:

Clip and story here

So what do you think? Is he completely off his rocker, or is he acting? Apparently he snubbed the media at the recent premiere of his new movie Two Lovers - he asked them to sign some kind of release, and if they didn't, he wouldn't speak to them. But he didn't even speak to a director he worked with. Here's that story: http://omg.yahoo.com/news/talespin-the-saga-of-joaquin-phoenix/18808?nc

What's going on with him??

It makes me really sad to think of him not acting anymore though. He's quite a brilliant actor. Or at least he was!

maybe - or maybe he's just playing a prank? I'm curious though.

Wow. Well...I must say it does seem reminiscent of Tony Clifton.

It's really hard to say with actors, having been among them for so long.

I knew one who was quite good, and then he quit acting, and whenever anyone even so much as raised an eyebrow, he'd launch into this speech about was it really that unusual, and how come nobody ever thinks that once you've been bit by the bug, you can never quit, etc., etc. He was really defensive about it. So, maybe Joaquin is quitting.

Then again, taken at face value, with respect to his complete lack of making an effort to promote his movie, he could be acting as a conscientious objector, either to this particular movie, or to filmmaking/Hollywood in general. And as a quirky person and as an actor, who has to compete in today's world of Dr. Horrible and other quirky indie successes, maybe he's trying to object in as weird and artsy way as possible, hence the act. Or maybe he got screwed on the movie deal, and he just doesn't want the producers to make any money off of him. Like, he did his job by acting in the movie, fulfilled his contract, but that's as far as he's going to go. Even though he might have been required as part of his contract to go on talk shows, he's not required to participate in a meaningful way. It's a brilliant way to object, I think, but if that's what he's doing, he's missing the mark by not telling anybody what he's objecting to and why.

The third possibility is the whole Tony Clifton thing. This is just some elaborate in-joke that none of us, and certainly not the staff of Letterman, are in on. And maybe it has something to do with Casey Affleck filming him all the time. Maybe Joaquin will reveal it later, and maybe he won't. I don't think Andy Kaufman ever publicly admitted that he was Tony Clifton. But, all of it being some weird joke is completely plausible, given the general insanity of actors, and the extra-crazy typically found in gifted actors (Tom Cruise, anyone?).

So I guess what I'm saying is, time will tell. Or maybe it won't. ;-)

I think Joaquin is definitely serious about quitting acting. but this may have been an acting stunt because he can. and it's funny - you and someone else here compared it to Andy Kaufman/Tony Clifton. that's such an interesting comparison. I thought it was too elaborate and too weird to be real - his behavior could change but it seems unlikely. he is definitely getting attention though!

I read about that interview - his behaviour sounds bizarre! And I do think it's a shame if he's not going to act any more - I've loved some of his films.

By the way, for your comm, have you ever done sportsmen or women who became actors? I wonder if there are enough? I can think of The Rock, OJ Simpson, Hulk Hogan, Michael Jordan, erm.... Just wondered. :-)

that idea is a great one for the daily actor! I think that the Rock was posted a long time ago, but I forgot about OJ and Hulk and others. and there's the other martial arts guys like Van Damme and Steven Seagal. great!!! thanks!!!

Hmm.... I'm sure there must be. Can't think of any off the top of my head though.

After watching him on Letterman, I really got the feeling that he's pulling some kind of Andy Kaufman-like stunt. Right before they cut to commercial, he took off his shades and seemed to smile at Dave, and to me it looked knowingly. Andy used to appear on Letterman when he was "feuding" with that professional wrestler guy, so I know Dave's not a stranger to pranks. Plus Casey Affleck is filming a "documentary" about Joaquin's rap career, and I have to think Casey wouldn't let his brother-in-law spiral so badly on film for real, you know? I hope I'm right, anyway. LOL

that's funny you mentioned Andy Kaufman - someone else mentioned the Tony Clifton thing. I wonder if Letterman was in on it, or if he was pulling a prank on Letterman. either would be plausible. for sure! So interesting...

Yep. My husband is convinced that it's a prank, and that he's not high on anything. He thinks that Joaquin Phoenix is a talented enough actor to pull it off. Also, notice the smirk on his face around 1:24 on that video when the audience starts laughing at him. It's got to be some kind of in joke.

yea he is a talented enough actor for sure, that's why I think it's a prank. it was just too weird to be real.

but the rap thing - is that a joke too?
I'm so curious.

I'm sad for him. He's one of my favorite actors, and I just wish he'd be ok. I don't know if he's acting, because it seems to permeate his real life pretty well.
