the role of his lifetime?

I've been following the stories for quite awhile about Joaquin Phoenix and his decision to quit acting and become a rap singer. But his bizarre behavior on the David Letterman show last night has me really puzzled. If you haven't already heard, Joaquin went onto Letterman with a full beard, speaking in monosyllables, hardly laughing, chewing gum, and looking very dazed and confused (or perhaps stoned?). I'm wondering if this is for real, or if he's really just giving his "last great performance." I couldn't get the whole interview on You Tube because of copyright issues, but here's about 5 minutes from The Huffington Post:

Clip and story here

So what do you think? Is he completely off his rocker, or is he acting? Apparently he snubbed the media at the recent premiere of his new movie Two Lovers - he asked them to sign some kind of release, and if they didn't, he wouldn't speak to them. But he didn't even speak to a director he worked with. Here's that story: http://omg.yahoo.com/news/talespin-the-saga-of-joaquin-phoenix/18808?nc

What's going on with him??

It makes me really sad to think of him not acting anymore though. He's quite a brilliant actor. Or at least he was!

After watching him on Letterman, I really got the feeling that he's pulling some kind of Andy Kaufman-like stunt. Right before they cut to commercial, he took off his shades and seemed to smile at Dave, and to me it looked knowingly. Andy used to appear on Letterman when he was "feuding" with that professional wrestler guy, so I know Dave's not a stranger to pranks. Plus Casey Affleck is filming a "documentary" about Joaquin's rap career, and I have to think Casey wouldn't let his brother-in-law spiral so badly on film for real, you know? I hope I'm right, anyway. LOL

that's funny you mentioned Andy Kaufman - someone else mentioned the Tony Clifton thing. I wonder if Letterman was in on it, or if he was pulling a prank on Letterman. either would be plausible. for sure! So interesting...
