weekends on LJ are depressing - there's hardly anyone around. my email inbox is empty:(

but the good news is that our storms seem to have gone. however, we're now in the middle of a heatwave - yesterday it was nearly 90 with high humidity, and today it's already 80 degrees out at 10:30 a.m.

the weekend's been busy so far. we went swimming after work Friday, then watched Zack and Mirri Make a Porno . The concept was a great one, and I thought the porn filming scenes were hilarious (especially Star Whores), but overall I was disappointed. But I think it's because I'm not a big fan of Kevin Smith movies in general. I liked Clerks when it came out years ago, but I hated Chasing Amy and haven't been able to watch any of Smith's other films. I don't think Zack and Mirri was a terrible film, and some scenes and characters (especially Lester) had me laughing out loud. And don't get me wrong - I can cuss up a storm when I want to, and I'm not shocked by hearing the word fuck in the movies. but does it really need to be in every line of dialogue? It's a bit too much. as was the (literal) bathroom humor. Also, for me there was too much focus on the Zack and Mirri falling in "love" - I think a love story is great, but they didn't even finish the stupid porno because they loved each other too much. a greater story would have been if they actually finished the porno and realized that it didn't affect their love for each other... or something like that.

Yesterday to beat the heat, we went to the movie theater to see Terminator: Salvation and we loved it! Christian Bale was awesome as John Connor, and I loved seeing Chekhov (aka Anton Yelchin) as Kyle Reese. Sam Worthington was really hot too! They totally left that open for more sequels too. But if Christian Bale continues to play John Connor, I'll be there to see them all!

Now we want to go and see Johnny Depp play John Dillinger in Public Enemies .
I can't wait to see Johnny and Christian Bale together (Christian will play FBI chief and original Untouchable Melvin Purvis). That movies starts 4th of July weekend!

before I go, I have a request. I need some new music to listen to... so what are you all listening to now? please give me suggestions, I'm open for anything (except rap and country - sorry!)

now I've gotta go and call my dad and wish him a happy father's day. he just got home from the nursing home on Thursday and he's doing really good!

ohh...you reminded me that I meant to share this with you--this came out not too long ago--have you seen this? Johnny Depp is sooooo hot! I definitely would not kick him out of bed for eating crackers. ha

Lately, I've been listening to Los Lonely Boys a lot. I like the blues though...

I haven't heard Los Lonely Boys - they look pretty cool so I'll have to check them out:)

you gotta watch him in the rum diary too!
i mean that's still in production but they filmed in my home town!! AND they used my grandfather's art work!

as for music...
my favorite band is and always will be jump little children
i also actually really like minnie driver's music, but that's totally different from JLC.
and just because i have to....LADY GAGA.

oh wow - that's very cool about the Rum Diary - what town was it filmed in? I have not heard about that production. but anything with Johnny is worth watching.

I tried finding something about Jump Little Children, but couldn't find much. what kind of music do they play?

Haha, my flist has gotten mighty quiet as well. :) Man, it's all or nothing here in the midwest, isn't it? We're still having tons of rain.

I'm glad you liked Terminator! I saw that a couple weeks ago, and I really loved the Kyle Reese character. The action was great, too.

I CANNOT WAIT FOR PUBLIC ENEMIES! I'm so excited to see Johnny on the big screen. :)

Here's some music I'm currently listening to:

Ben Folds Five-The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner
Ben Folds-Rockin' The Suburbs
Belle & Sebastian-Dear Catastrophe Waitress and The Life Pursuit
Amy Millan-Honey From the Tombs

All of them are some of my favorite albums EVER. I hope you enjoy! They come highly listened to and highly recommended.

we had more rain last night - it just keeps coming back. I feel like I'm living in the tropics lately!

I used to have that Ben Folds Five CD, but for some reason I don't have it anymore... hmmm... but I still have their first one - that's great:)

I found downloads of all of these - but then realized I couldn't play the download of Dear Catastrope Waitress because it's an m4a file. I need mp3. I'll keep searching:) thanks for the suggestions:)

Still haven't seen Terminator: Salvation but I'm dying to. I'm also looking forward to Public Enemies. That looks really good. But I have to say, I'm MOST looking forward to Transformers. Seriously looking forward to that one!!!

I loved Chasing Amy until it got so serious and dramatic... in general, I love Kevin Smith movies... Clerks and Dogma will always be favorites. :-)

Let's see... right now I'm listening to the "Yeah Yeah Yeah's." Kind of funky, but good stuff. You could always pop in some Pink Floyd... Tori Amos... Sarah McLachlan... Nickleback... Linkin Park... Lots of good stuff out there!

the Terminator movie is really good! I also want to see Transformers - there's lots of good movies coming out:)

I think I must be the exception with Kevin Smith movies - they just are too crass for me I guess. but ironically the reason i was disappointed with Zack and Mirri was that it also became too serious and dramatic, with too much emphasis on the love relationship. If it stuck with the porn scenes, it would have been more funny.

at your suggestion, I downloaded a cd by the yeah yeah yeahs (I've never heard them so I'll let you know what I think) and also got another sarah maclachlan (I have one of hers already)... Linkin Park's a bit too heavy for me.
and i've never been a Tori Amos fan. not sure why, but I just don't like her.

thanks:)

I forgot to tell you my funny Chasing Amy story, though... I made the mistake of watching it with my mom and dad (this was years ago) and i didn't know what the movie was about.
I had to turn it off when the girls started talking in depth about how they got each other off. in-depth lesbian sex talk was a bit too much for my mom - she was shocked to say the least! I think I went back and finished the movie another time, but I never really got into it.

so yea... but I did really like Clerks, though I was much younger when I saw that. and I didn't watch that with my parents - LOL!
wolfpurplemoon: A cute cartoon character with orange hair, glasses, kitty ears and holding a coffee, the colours are bright and pinkish/purple (never forget)

I think I mentioned when I watched Zack and Miri a couple of months ago that I really enjoy Kevin Smith's films, I don't know why, there's just something about them that makes me like them! :D

I'm totally looking forward to Public Enemies, I saw the trailer when we went to see Transformers yesterday.

The last two CDs I bought were Pink's Funhouse and H.I.M.'s Dark Light, both of which I'm enjoying very much. They are totally different from each other, and neither are rap or country!

how was Transformers? I think it must have been released in the UK before it was released here. it's supposed to start here this week.

I've never listened to Pink - and I'm not familiar with H.I.M. - what kind of music?

Hey there, hon! I'm glad to hear your dad is doing good! :D

Music-wise, I've been really enjoying Greg Laswell lately, which I first heard through "Off I Go." I still have yet to get any of his albums, but I definitely want them, particularly the most recent one! What I've heard so far, though, I really like. :D In the meanwhile, I've been listening to his myspace page over and over. ;) At least it's a great, free way to hear several full length songs, lol! ;)

I haven't been able to see the new Terminator yet (I just managed Star Trek the other day ;) ) but I hope to see it eventually! :D I've loved the other movies in their own ways so I'm sure I'll love this one as well! \o/

Ugh, I hate the heat/humidity combination! High humidity makes it so hard for me to breathe, argh! :( It's been SO humid here lately and half the time it feels like I have an elephant standing on my chest, yikes! O_O Hopefully the weather will improve for us both soon! :D

*big hugs!* ♥♥♥!!!

I'm not a big fan of humidity, and lately it's been like living in the tropics here (but without the beautiful scenery)... it's so wet and hot and will be all week! *sigh* time to turn on the A/C and watch movies!

oh do see Terminator - it's very very good!!

I finally caught up on your happy days posts - sorry I was sooo behind...

I'm gonna check out Greg Laswell - thanks for the suggestion:)

*giant hugs*
have a great week!!

I'm glad that the weekends (or at least the Sundays) are a bit quieter on lj, it gives me more of a chance to catch up. I didn't post on my own lj but I did make a post for the [livejournal.com profile] ewan_playground. I don't know if you like Ewan, there's a few pretty new pics from the premiere of Angels & Demons in China.

It's good to read you liked Christian in Terminator, so many people are criticizing what he did. I loved him as well as Sam Worthington. Now all I hope is that we'll get a sequel. And of course I'm waiting eagerly for Public Enemies, for both Christian and Marion.

I think it's silly if people are criticizing Christian Bale for what he did while filming Terminator. that doesn't affect the movie, at least for me. it was a great film! oh I saw that Marion is in Public Enemies too - what a great cast!

I'll have to check out your Ewan pictures - for sure:)

I'm usually here on weekends, but I was busy this time. Sorry it was quiet for you.

I think I'll wait until the DVD comes out for Terminator. None of the rest of the family is too bothered.

Hmmm. Music. I've rediscovered lots of old stuff since I had my iPod. I also downloaded the Snow Patrol album (Eyes Open) the other day. And I like Maroon Five, Songs About Jane - keep listening to that one. For heavier stuff, I like 30 Seconds to Mars, A Beautiful Lie.

yea it seemed extra quiet this weekend, but that's pretty normal for weekends. people are out enjoying summer:)

you could wait for DVD on Terminator - but I really thought it was good:)

I love Snow Patrol and have Eyes Open, as well as their most recent release. I never got into Maroon Five, but maybe I'll give them a second chance:)

hope you're having a good day!

I think Blogger's more active but yeah it does get pretty dead over here. It's going to be climbing up here and today it was 85 so yet another thing to bitch about when I blog. Oops I'm guessing you mean the not dead Kevin Smith. Any time I see the name I think of the hot one from Xena.

nope not the dead Kevin Smith - LOL! it's going to be in the high 80s and 90s this week, with humidity. yuck! oh well it's summer:)

I'm weird. I actually like the hot weather. My husband told my in-laws that I didn't turn on the air conditioning yesterday, and they were amazed. They kept asking me why I didn't turn it on. It was so hot and muggy! Today, I broke down and turned on the air, but that was mostly because my husband and I were closing up the house because we were going to my parents' place to celebrate Father's Day. I didn't want the kitties to roast! I guess the heat doesn't bother me much. I must be my father's daughter. He likes the hot weather too.

You mentioned going to the movie theater to get out of the heat. Do you not have air conditioning at your place?

posted by [identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com at 07:29pm on 22/06/2009
I've never been one for hot, humid weather. I'm not sure how I survived in Sacramento CA where the summer temps were above 100 most days. but at least there it wasn't humid, like in Japan where it was sticky and hot for about three months! and we didn't have central air conditioning!

I also worry about my cat when we're gone during the day because I hate leaving him in a hot apartment. we have air conditioning, but I don't like to run it all day. that's why I like getting out the apartment on hot weekends, so someone else can provide the a/c and I can save some money - LOL!

I'm glad to hear your Dad is home and doing well--that's great! ♥

Re: Kevin Smith. I've always liked him and I usually like his movies, but I can't stand the toilet/gross-out humor. I just find it to be so unimaginative and boring (and disgusting!) :-) He uses it more in some movies than others, with Clerks 2 being a major offender. I don't ever want to see that one again...ugh! I enjoyed Zack and Miri, but I wish he would have left out the potty humor. And I wish it would have been more about them making Star Whores. That was a really funny idea! :-)

I'm so glad you enjoyed Terminator Salvation. We liked it okay, but my main complaint was that there wasn't enough Christian Bale! :-) I read somewhere that the next film in the series might feature Christian time-traveling back to London, circa 2009. I think that could be really interesting! And of course, I'm also quite excited about Public Enemies. We'll be going to see it that first weekend, too.

Re: Music. I listen to a lot of movie soundtracks/scores. Do you like them? Some of my favorites are Donnie Darko, Labyrinth, Return to Oz, and The Assassination of Jesse James. We watched the movie "Wonderland" the other day and now I want to get that soundtrack, too (it's got a lot of good classic rock!) I also just got Mandy Moore's new CD, "Amanda Leigh." Are you familiar with her more recent music? It reminds me a lot of the 70's singer-songwriters. Her last CD "Wild Hope" is really great...it's very breezy and uplifting, but also very honest and inspiring. I love it!

you know, your thoughts about Kevin Smith, and about the toilet humor, are right on par with mine. that's exactly how I feel - overall I enjoyed Zack and Mirri, but hated the (literal) potty humor. and I was totally hoping to seeing more "Star Whores" - that would have been hilarious!!

there should have been more Christian Bale in that Terminator movie, you're right! but his scenes were great, and so powerful. that time-travel London idea sounds awesome - I hope they do that!

I haven't listened to a lot of soundtracks or scores, but I do love Donnie Darko - that's my favorite movie!! and "Wonderland" was a great movie too - I should check out that soundtrack. I wouldn't have thought to listen to Mandy Moore, but I'll check her out too:) I like the '70s sound, so that would be nice. thanks for the suggestions!

I hope you're doing good and enjoying the first days of summer- though you're more of a winter girl aren't you?
take care!
*hugs*

Happy Monday, my dear. No heat wave here. Yesterday the weather was crazy...sun, rain, sun, thunder and lightning, a little more sun and then rain. But we don't get the humidity so it's not too bad.

Natascha watched Zack and Mirri Make a Porno and said reviewed it just like you. She said it was fun and she laughed but it wasn't great. She's in Tennessee right now and went with her Grandma to see The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. She said it was a good movie but it was weird hearing the word 'fuck' about 100 times with her grandmother sitting right next to her. ;-)

I've been listening to Boz Scaggs all weekend. I loved him in the 70's and 80's. He's kind of jazzy and his music relaxes me.
Have a good week, Laura.

posted by [identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com at 07:47pm on 22/06/2009
happy Monday to you too!! I don't remember much thunder and lightning in Port Angeles - but we sure get it here! and the humidity and heat at the same time. yuck!
Chicago is not a desirable place for weather though I shouldn't complain - at least it's not snowing and -20 degrees!

your story about Natascha and her grandmother reminds me of when I watched another Kevin Smith movie, Chasing Amy, with my parents. I had no idea what the movie was about, and when these girls started talking in detail about having sex, and how girls gave each other orgasms, my mom just about crawled under her chair! I was so embarrassed, and turned off the movie right away. it's been a funny story ever since, but at the time I wanted to die!

I love Boz Scaggs - but I don't think I have any of his music. maybe I'll get some - good suggestion, thanks:)

*hugs* and you have a good week too!

I'm so glad your dad is doing well hon, that's wonderful news! *hugs tight* On the music front I have nothing you'd want, lol, the kids are home so all they are listening to is Crazy Frog, it's a little insane!

nah Crazy Frog doesn't sound like my kind of music - LOL!

I"m totally looking forward to seeing my dad in a couple months - and helping my mom take care of him for awhile. it will be really rewarding for me. I've missed them too much.

*hugs tight*
