movies, and a music request

weekends on LJ are depressing - there's hardly anyone around. my email inbox is empty:(

but the good news is that our storms seem to have gone. however, we're now in the middle of a heatwave - yesterday it was nearly 90 with high humidity, and today it's already 80 degrees out at 10:30 a.m.

the weekend's been busy so far. we went swimming after work Friday, then watched Zack and Mirri Make a Porno . The concept was a great one, and I thought the porn filming scenes were hilarious (especially Star Whores), but overall I was disappointed. But I think it's because I'm not a big fan of Kevin Smith movies in general. I liked Clerks when it came out years ago, but I hated Chasing Amy and haven't been able to watch any of Smith's other films. I don't think Zack and Mirri was a terrible film, and some scenes and characters (especially Lester) had me laughing out loud. And don't get me wrong - I can cuss up a storm when I want to, and I'm not shocked by hearing the word fuck in the movies. but does it really need to be in every line of dialogue? It's a bit too much. as was the (literal) bathroom humor. Also, for me there was too much focus on the Zack and Mirri falling in "love" - I think a love story is great, but they didn't even finish the stupid porno because they loved each other too much. a greater story would have been if they actually finished the porno and realized that it didn't affect their love for each other... or something like that.

Yesterday to beat the heat, we went to the movie theater to see Terminator: Salvation and we loved it! Christian Bale was awesome as John Connor, and I loved seeing Chekhov (aka Anton Yelchin) as Kyle Reese. Sam Worthington was really hot too! They totally left that open for more sequels too. But if Christian Bale continues to play John Connor, I'll be there to see them all!

Now we want to go and see Johnny Depp play John Dillinger in Public Enemies .
I can't wait to see Johnny and Christian Bale together (Christian will play FBI chief and original Untouchable Melvin Purvis). That movies starts 4th of July weekend!

before I go, I have a request. I need some new music to listen to... so what are you all listening to now? please give me suggestions, I'm open for anything (except rap and country - sorry!)

now I've gotta go and call my dad and wish him a happy father's day. he just got home from the nursing home on Thursday and he's doing really good!

Still haven't seen Terminator: Salvation but I'm dying to. I'm also looking forward to Public Enemies. That looks really good. But I have to say, I'm MOST looking forward to Transformers. Seriously looking forward to that one!!!

I loved Chasing Amy until it got so serious and dramatic... in general, I love Kevin Smith movies... Clerks and Dogma will always be favorites. :-)

Let's see... right now I'm listening to the "Yeah Yeah Yeah's." Kind of funky, but good stuff. You could always pop in some Pink Floyd... Tori Amos... Sarah McLachlan... Nickleback... Linkin Park... Lots of good stuff out there!

the Terminator movie is really good! I also want to see Transformers - there's lots of good movies coming out:)

I think I must be the exception with Kevin Smith movies - they just are too crass for me I guess. but ironically the reason i was disappointed with Zack and Mirri was that it also became too serious and dramatic, with too much emphasis on the love relationship. If it stuck with the porn scenes, it would have been more funny.

at your suggestion, I downloaded a cd by the yeah yeah yeahs (I've never heard them so I'll let you know what I think) and also got another sarah maclachlan (I have one of hers already)... Linkin Park's a bit too heavy for me.
and i've never been a Tori Amos fan. not sure why, but I just don't like her.

thanks:)

There are a lot of good flicks out and more coming out! I think I'm going to see Transformers tomorrow!

I'm usually totally put off by the really crude and crass... but for some reason, Kevin Smith movies always crack me up. I'm simple like that. lol...

Well... Tori isn't for everybody. She can definitely be a bit of an acquired taste. lol...

So what did you think of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs?

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-07-01 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
so did you see Transformers yet? how was it?

hmmm, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs? I'm not sure if I liked them or not. it's not really what I expected - the singer's voice is really unusual. but I might give it another try later.

I *loved* Transformers. Seriously. I thought it was probably a bit better than the first. I'll be posting a wee review of it in a bit. :-)

Well, you must think my taste in music sucks by now!!! lol...

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-07-01 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think your taste in music sucks. you like some stuff I like - and everyone has their own tastes, it's just maybe different from mine.

now I really want to see Transformers!

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2009-07-01 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
lol... that was so diplomatic of you. ;-)

I think you'll love it... at least I hope you will! lol...

I forgot to tell you my funny Chasing Amy story, though... I made the mistake of watching it with my mom and dad (this was years ago) and i didn't know what the movie was about.
I had to turn it off when the girls started talking in depth about how they got each other off. in-depth lesbian sex talk was a bit too much for my mom - she was shocked to say the least! I think I went back and finished the movie another time, but I never really got into it.

so yea... but I did really like Clerks, though I was much younger when I saw that. and I didn't watch that with my parents - LOL!

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2009-06-27 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
LOL... yeah, I think that might be a bit too much for the parentals. lol... Definitely not parent-friendly. LOL... too funny.

I've got a personal Chasing Amy story that might amuse you... some years back now, my group of friends and I used to hang out at this pub most weekends. I'd met a girl through some other friends and all and was very into her... anyway, I invited her to join us at the pub one night intent on "making my move." So she shows up with a friend of hers and everybody was having a good time... it became very apparently shortly after they arrived that her friend was... well... a very close friend. lol... yeah. When all of my friends caught on to what was going on, they couldn't stop laughing at me and took great delight in calling me Holden the rest of the night... in fact, they still remind me of that to this very day. lol...

wasn't Holden the character in Catcher in the Rye? or was that also a character in Chasing Amy? It's been years since I saw that movie. that's a funny story too!

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2009-07-01 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
lol... Holden Caufield was the character in Catcher in the Rye... Holden McNeil was the character in Chasing Amy. :-)

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-07-01 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
yup Catcher in the Rye was a great book.
I didn't remember the characters in Chasing Amy - but I wonder if it wasn't coincidental that they named him HOlden?

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2009-07-01 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh honestly, I hated Catcher in the Rye. I seriously despised Holden... I so wanted to smack him upside the head. lol...

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
oh Holden Caulfield was despicable, but that's why the book was so good! because Salinger made his narrator/character so horrible you actually learned to love him. I read another book that was similar which was The Ginger Man by JP Donleavy. The narrator is so horrible he makes Holden look like a boyscout, seriously. but the book was so well-written that I kept turning pages.

that's a sign of a great writer!

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh evoking emotions is definitely the sign of a great writer. And on that count, Salinger succeeded... but Holden was so absolutely despicable to me that I honestly didn't learn to love him... I just despised him from start to finish... I didn't see any change in him from the beginning of the book to the end. He was completely unredeemed in my eyes. Bleh. lol...

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-07-07 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
you wouldn't like the Ginger Man either then - the narrator like I said is even more despicable than Holden. if you can believe that! a mysoginist (spelling?), lazy, drunk, dirty, a thief, takes advantage of everyone... but somehow I was compelled enough to almost finish the book. but I didn't finish it.

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2009-07-08 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
lol... he sounds like a scumbag. What made you finally put the book down?

Oh and I finally posted my 5-words meme that you assigned me. :-)
