For those of you who participated in my movie poll, thanks for the suggestions. For those of you who didn't see the poll, I had asked for suggestions on what movie I should see on Wednesday. It was overwhelmingly in favor of my seeing the animated movie Up . And I was really looking forward to seeing it!

However, it turns out I didn't need the poll after all... because I didn't have as many choices as I thought I did. I should have asked my husband to check the movie theater's website before I posted my poll, because I misunderstood it completely. I thought I had so many options, but the website was actually for other locations in addition to the one in Numazu (which is a town near Fuji). Up is only showing there with Japanese dubbing! The only place I can see it in English with Japanese subtitles is in Tokyo.

The other movies I put on my poll, dr. Parnassus and the Jim Jarmusch movie, are also not showing near here. Where the Wild Things is showing in English, but only at night, and we are going in the daytime.

So... after all that, we are going to see Avatar after all!

boy, sometimes living in Japan is such a nightmare! I think after this, I'll stick to downloading movies and watching on my computer:) For some reason the Japanese people are too lazy to read subtitles, and choose to butcher movies by dubbing into their own language. Where does that leave us poor foreigners who can't understand Japanese?

anyway, it's just another issue I need to have patience with. I'm happy I'm going to see a movie and have lunch on Wednesday:)

good night! I'll be back later in the week with more updates. I wasn't really in the proper mood to update this weekend.

Good Morning, Laura. I haven't been here on LJ for over a week so I missed your poll. I wouldn't have been much help, I haven't seen any movies for a while. I did see "An Education" with Natascha about a month ago. We both really liked it.

I haven't seen you for awhile. don't worry about missing the poll - I can't see most of the movies I put on there anyway.

hm, I'm not sure I'm familiar with "An Education" - whos in that?

i'm actually not going to see Avatar in 3-D because it's not offered in that, for one (in English that is), and because I can't actually watch 3-D because of an injury to my eye when I was four years old. I have very poor vision in my left eye, and am legally blind in that eye. so I can't see out of binoculars on that side, and I can't view movies in 3-D. so I'll be seeing the movie flat. oh well. I think it will still be impressive - at least i hope it is!

I do want to see Dr. Parnassus - and I'll have to check that one out somehow.

my eye is something I've learned to live with since the accident happened at age 4. I had surgery when I was 7, and since then haven't really seen out of both eyes. it affects my driving (which I'm not doing here in Japan anyway), and it affects my ability to see peripherally too. and of course the 3-D thing. if you see some pictures of me, or if you met me, you'd notice it too - my eye wanders. my husband wants to get it fixed if we ever get money, but I told him not to bother. if I could get my vision back, that'd be great. but cosmetically I can live with it - it's the way I am.

I think Avatar in 3D would be amazing, but without it, I still found it gorgeous.

I think my eye is more noticeable if you see me in person - and sadly in my passport photo it looks awful. but oh well!

aw, thanks for the compliment. as I get older, I feel less and less confident about my looks, but then I also care less. LOL!

I'm definitely not worried about missing 3-D. though I wish my eyesight could be a bit better, especially at night.

I hate dubbed movies so much! Must be even worse dubbed out of English rather than in!

Ah well, I'm sure you'll enjoy Avatar, it is full of amazing visuals.

movie dubbing is such a horrible thing. it seems like when I lived here 10 years ago, I had an easier time seeing movies, but now most of them seem to be either Japanese movies, or dubbed into Japanese. so I'm stuck watching movies on my computer. *sigh*

I wasn't sure if I wanted to see Avatar, but I'm curious. and it should be fun anyway.

I missed that poll - sorry about that.

Shame you were stuck with no choice after all though.

I hope you feel happier soon. Maybe it's the time of year?

yea it's hard to have no options. but if we could have gone at night, there might have been more.

I'll be happier if I can find out about this job I want. but still nothing! spring will be much better though I'm sure.

I really enjoyed Avatar... the story is pretty simple but the effects are totally amazing. It was a fun film. Though I would have picked Where the Wild Things Are. :-)

yea I'd heard complaints that the story wasn't so original, but I guess it's a pretty good message, and the effects too. I am not seeing it in 3-D though. I can't because of my eyes.

anyway I would love to see Where the Wild Things are - that was my first pick. oh well!

I didn't see it in 3-D either. I know everybody is raving about that but personally, I didn't think I missed anything seeing it in on a regular screen. I hope you enjoy it!!!

I hope so too - I'm going tomorrow, so I'll be writing a review. or at least my thoughts.

Dubbing is EVIL! Why? Why? Why? It takes so much away from the actors' performance.

yes I agree - dubbing is evil and it's lazy! I don't know why Japanese people can't read subtitles:)

looks like I'll have to wait to see Up on DVD or on my computer. and I'll see Avatar on Wednesday - I'll post my thoughts afterwards:)

Is it in 2d or 3d?

unfortunately I can't watch 3-D because of the accident I had that damaged my eye when I was 4 years old. I've never been able to watch a movie in 3-D. my friend doesn't like it either because it makes her dizzy. so we're going to see it in normal 2-D.

I have to agree with you, every time I see a 3D movie I get a sick headache, I think it's because of my glasses. *hugs* I can't wait until someday we can see a movie together! ♥
