another year older and ...a music festival

Thank you [livejournal.com profile] wolfpurplemoon and [livejournal.com profile] dawnie1970 for the teddy bear v-gifts!! And thanks to anyone who wrote to say happy birthday - it's just 9:15 a.m. and I haven't decided what I'll do to celebrate. My big celebration was really yesterday though - my mom and I were busy all day: we had breakfast with her friends and my aunt and uncle at 8:30 and then from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. we were wandering around at the Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts here in Port Angeles, enjoying great music, food, art booths and seeing friends. The forecast had predicted rain, but instead it was sunny and beautiful all day - albeit a little cool, as is usual for Port Angeles this time of year. I really enjoyed the music groups I saw, and my only regret was that my husband couldn't be there with me. the last time I went to this festival was probably 2001 or 2002, and we saw an amazing young blues guitarist named David Jacobs-Strain. At the time he blew us away because he was only about 16 years old, with the performance ability and confidence of a veteran! My mom and I saw him yesterday, and while he's older, and doing more original songs, he was still just as phenomenal! Here's a video I found of him performing in 2009 - quite amazing:

Other groups we saw included a beautiful jazz singer from Oregon named Halie Loren (she performed this song):

My favorite act was a group called Rose's Pawn Shop, a bluegrass, folk rock group from Los Angeles. The hall where they performed had terrible sound, but still I had a chance to enjoy them and I even bought their CD. I thought they were so unique and so powerful! If you have a chance to check them out, I highly recommend them. Here's their website: http://rosespawnshop.com/

I couldn't find any good videos of their performance, but this might give you an idea:

Other acts we saw were an acoustic guitar trio, a really good all-female band from SF called Blame Sally, and finally a trio from Russia, TRIO VORONEZH, that played the most amazing mix of classical, polka, bluegrass and Russian folk music with traditional instruments. I took some pictures of their instruments, but here's their website so you can see for yourself: http://triovoronezh.com/TrioVoronezh/Trio_Voronezh.html - check out the videos on their site.

Overall it was a great day, and today I might wander over to the festival for the free stuff - the music venues are not free, but there is some free music outside and lots of booths and food.

Monday's a holiday, and Tuesday I'm back to the job search, as well as a doctor's appointment. Life goes on!

happy weekend everyone!

I thought you might enjoy the links - music stuff I always have you in mind.
the festival was really great - and Rose's Pawn Shop is very cool! I haven't heard of Mumford and Sons, though I"ll check them out now.

Some great music there! Reminds me of some of the acts we get at Towersey - a local festival.

I love local music fests! they're so much fun. I love getting introduced to new acts, and just the creativity you can find!

Yeah, we have some pretty major ones not too far from here as well, like the Reading Festival which was the city I went to university in but I never went to the festival!
