Valentine's Suggestions

Hi - I think I mentioned awhile back that I help put together a semi-monthly newsletter for my team at work - it's mostly just fun stuff like movie suggestions, crafts, facts about holidays, recipes and other fun ideas.

I'm in charge of the media section and the creative corner (arts, crafts, etc.), and our theme for February, of course, is Valentine's Day.

I'm not much of a fan of romantic movies (in fact, I don't like romantic comedies much at all), yet I want to come up with a list of good movie suggestions for Valentine's Day.
So that's where my friends come in:

Please post a comment with your favorite romantic movies, or the best movies you can suggest for Valentine's Day. These can even be anti-Valentine's Day movies (one that comes to mind is War of the Roses with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner), for those who hate the holiday! Whatever you can suggest would be great!

Also, if you're a crafty person, can you suggest any fun craft ideas for Valentine's Day - not necessarily for kids, but for anyone?

Thanks in advance!!!

I don't like romantic movies at all either.... But others who don't like romance claim When Harry Met Sally and Love, Actually are great. I've never watched them.

Anti-Valentines Day? Well I like the movie Mr. And Mrs. Smith actually. That might fit there and it is about love... Kind of.

I do really love When Harry Met Sally - though I never did like Love, Actually - it seemed a bit pretentious for me!

hm, I might have to add that Mr and Mrs Smith - I don't know much about it though...
thanks!

For some reason I'm struggling to come up with many romantic movies, here's a few I enjoy:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
500 Days of Summer
Sleepless in Seattle
Dirty Dancing
50 First Dates
Chocolat
You've Got Mail

Hope that's enough to start - I must say that the Romance list on the IMDb has a severe lack of actually romantic movies suitable for valentimes day!

oh gosh me too - my favorite actress Juliette Binoche, and Johnny Depp looking like a gorgeous human rather than a monster - LOL!

it's a beautiful movie!

It is brilliant and it's the first film I saw Johnny Depp in :)

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2013-01-12 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
wow - i saw him way back in Nightmare on Elm Street, just around the time that he was doing the tv show 21 Jump Street - he was so young!! then Benny and Joon and What's Eating Gilbert Grape - he was my favorite actor for awhile! and I realize I don't have anymore Johnny Depp icons - I had some and dumped them - LOL!

oh yes, Eternal Sunshine and 500 Days of Summer are fantastic!

Return of the Living Dead 3. No joke, this is a romantic horror movie. I actually teared up at the ending.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2013-01-09 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
wow - I never knew!!! I'll have to check it out!

I suck at anything Valentine's Day.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2013-01-09 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
actually me too - that's why it's amusing that I'm doing this valentine's movie thing in the newsletter - but it's still fun to put it together for others - LOL!

This surprised me since I am reticent to like romantic comedies, but husband and I really liked Midnight in Paris. We're also fans of Chocolat and Amelie.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2013-01-09 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
oh you're right - Midnight in Paris is a fantastic movie! thank you for reminding me!! I usually don't like Owen Wilson so much either - but he was really good!

and yes, Amelie - very good suggestion:)

I dislike romantic comedies too... and my sense of romance is sort of... twisted. My recent... not ex sometimes ex on again off again and I live a loooong way away, so I wrote in a journal every day for him, like a "here are all of my thoughts and ideas" until it was full and sent it to him, he loves it but it took a lot of work and dedication to do. I'm a little bit fanatic :)

I also bought a plush elephant and I've slept with it for months now with the intention of giving it to him but he told me to keep it since I was going through a bit of a rough patch with work. I've bought a similar plush bear and I'm going to send him that close to his birthday!

Anytime I send him anything or give him a gift I always include a paper crane. I've told him the story of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes and that he'll get a wish once I've given him 1000 :) I'm not even sure how many he has now- they're all kept in a gift box!

Here's an idea though- get a lovely Valentine's day card, write a really sweet and heartwarming message... it's got to be really emotional. Place the card opening facing the opening of the envelope and pour quite a bit of (but not TOO MUCH) fine glitter into the card and seal.

I don't know anyone who opens cards carefully (except the people I've played this trick on) most people will open the card and shower glitter all over themselves. And as you probably know- glitter is VERY hard to get rid of.

It's really hard for the person to be mad when they read the heartwarming message, so it's funny to see their reactions :)

I did it to one of my Canadian friends and told his housemate beforehand to keep an eye on what happened when he opened the card- glitter stars went EVERYWHERE and because they have pointy edges that catch in the carpet they're really hard to hoover up. He loved it and had a good laugh :)

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2013-01-10 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
the glitter idea does sound fun - but only for someone who wouldn't get mad - LOL!

The movie Valentine's Day is cute it is a few stories that in teh end all tie together one way or another. Also You Got Mail is a favorite of mine as well.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2013-01-10 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
I think I've heard of that movie - I'll have to recommend it, and maybe watch it myself - LOL! lots of people suggested You've Got Mail - tom and meg are good together!

[identity profile] endlessblush.livejournal.com 2013-01-09 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
You've got Mail .. I love that one.

Like Water for Chocolate is one of my absolute faves. It's a must watch.

Love Actually (does it really matter that it's a Christmas movie) or Bridget Jones

Great!

I've got another movie for you

Under a Tuscan Sun .. love that.

I also liked Unfaithful ... and Must Love Dogs .. (I like Diane Lane - can you tell - I've got a bit of a girl crush on her actually :)

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2013-01-12 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
I do love Diane Lane too! she was so beautiful in the early films like The Outsiders. and she really stayed beautiful. I did like Must Love Dogs - surprisingly. but I also love John Cusack - i had such a crush on him when he was in Say Anything - which is my favorite romantic film of all time.
I'll have to watch Under the Tuscan Sun - though it will just make me wish I had money to travel!

[identity profile] endlessblush.livejournal.com 2013-01-12 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You haven't seen Under a Tuscan Sun?

I insist that you do! ASAP! You will love and of course you will want to go to Tuscany but that's the way it goes :)

I thought of more Johan Cusack movies

The Sure Thing - a very oldie but a goodie :)
Say Anything - <3
Serendipity

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2013-01-14 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
the funny thing - Under a Tuscan Sun was on cable yesterday morning, but I got into the middle of it. so I'll have to check it out from start to finish sometime very soon!

the Sure Thing is awesome - and Say Anything is my favorite John Cusack movie!
Did you see Better Off Dead? it's silly but classic! And Grosse Point Blank! awesome movie!

[identity profile] endlessblush.livejournal.com 2013-01-15 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
YES! I've seen Better off Dead =... and Grosse Point Blank!

Now I feel the need to go dig out my Under the Tuscan Sun dvd.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2013-01-23 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
I really need to see that film - it will be on my list of things to do in February!

I also need to get a copy of Better Off Dead - I have Grosse Point Blank - love it!!!

[identity profile] bitchygrrl.livejournal.com 2013-01-10 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
My Bloody Valentine and Valentine both horror movies.
Casablanca, Dark Victory, The Wedding Singer, Amelie, Kissing Jessiica Stein, A Four Letter Word, Before Sunset, An Affair to Remember, In the Mood, Brokeback Mountain, But I'm a Cheetleader, Bound, In the Mood for Love (the original not the crappy American remake).
I didn't repeat anything already mentioned though I love quite a few of the movies mentioned. I also included so LGBT titles because everyone celebrates Vday :)

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2013-01-12 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
I think I saw My Bloody Valentine - was Jensen Ackles in that?

ooh those are all good suggestions - The Wedding Singer is great and the only movie with Adam Sandler that I can tolerate. Jessica Stein was a surprise - I liked it a lot! Brokeback Mountain too -...

Thanks!
