See, I thought Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was a Val Kilmer HIGHLIGHT. I guess it's all perspective but I don't think anyone could've done it like Val Kilmer. Some people know some of his lines and I've seen so many people try to say them, but nobody can really deliver it like Val Kilmer and that kills me. I thought that he seemed tired but I also attributed that to his character (but maybe it wasn't...the last thing I saw Val Kilmer in was The Salton Sea so I have no idea, really...and if you do don't tell me). It was really clever and I enjoyed the style a lot but honestly, Val Kilmer killed me in it. He was the reason I enjoyed this movie so much. I dunno, I've never really seen a snarky character that is actually funny. Usually they're just bitches.

Now, to American Psycho which is absolutely one of my favorite movies. It kills me (I acted out the Huey Lewis thing when we did Videoke and I'm still buzzing from how awesome it was). I do think those are really good points about the director being a woman because I think it would've come out as a typical movie about a crazy guy otherwise. I'm not sure I would say the main point of the movie (or character) is Bateman's misogyny, but I would say that it is a strong point. I do see the greed, but I see it more than the impulsiveness that I think characterizes a serial killer in most movies--I mean, he basically kills the guy over business cards.

What I really loved about the movie was the comedic aspect. It's so expertly done. Dark comedies aren't exactly prevalent (because they can rally only be satire, and satire usually ends up being more dramatic)--although if you looked you'd find that there was a huge spurt of popular dark comedies around the time of American Psycho (American Beauty and Fight Club to name a couple)--so when a movie actually manages to be that brilliantly dark and make you laugh at senseless killings or someone attempting to squish a kitten into an ATM machine (and somehow thinking pointing a gun at it will do it), then it's wonderful. I guess, as you said with the musical introductions, absurd is the word, but so dark that it sort of surpasses typical absurdism.

And I really liked the ambiguity of the ending. That's one of my favorite things about the movie.

That and the fact that yeah, Christian Bale does have quite the delicious bod.

I really think I might need to rewatch Kiss Kiss... I did enjoy it, but just didn't follow it closely and maybe that's because other stuff was going on around me when I was watching it. I really loved Val Kilmer in The doors and in Heat - and especially in Wonderland as John HOlmes. Great role, that was!

I agree with you on all points about American Psycho - it was very interesting how I felt like laughing at all of the parts where it's very inappropriate to laugh. brilliantly done. I also liked the ending and of course found it very ambiguous. it really makes you wonder if it's in his head, or if it was all real. and yes, Christian Bale is quite yummy. I love your icon!

was wondering what you thought of Fear and Loathing - or did you see it? it does have that actor that I remember you dislike so much: Benicio. I don't like him much either, and he does nothing for this movie.

I haven't seen Fear and Loathing but I know I must. At some point I need to borrow it from a friend of mine who has it. I keep meaning to and I keep forgetting.

I hope you enjoy it more than I did. *sigh* I think I'm getting too old for wild, drugged out movies with too little plot. or maybe it's not age, but my interests have changed. perhaps I should give it another chance. who knows... would be interested to know what you think if you do give it a viewing.
