apparently there's something wrong with my computer. recently we had a very big storm, and Comcast (my internet provider) was out for several hours. after they came back, I couldn't access the internet anymore through the modem or through my router. For the last week, I've only been able to get online via a wireless connection - and I think I'm actually picking that up from someone else nearby. which is a bit weird and really not safe in my opinion. it's an unsecured connection. and last night I couldn't even get the wireless connection to work so I couldn't get online at all. I ended up on the phone for over two hours with Comcast first, then Linksys (the manufacturer of the router), who told me that the problem is with my computer. The guy at Linksys told me to call Dell - but I totally refuse to call their customer service, which is in India. So I gave up and called The Geek Squad. They will be here next Saturday morning to see if they can fix my problem. If they can, it's just a flat rate of $159.00 (not bad, but of course it's still money I don't want to spend). If they can't fix it, they guarantee that I won't pay them anything. but if they cant fix it, then I will either have to continue accessing the internet wirelessly over unsecure networks, or buy a new computer. and I can't afford a new computer - not when I might also have to buy a newer car soon.
so I was so entirely bummed last night. has anyone ever heard of this problem happening to a computer? it's not the modem because Masahiko's computer will connect with a wired, not wireless, connection. and it's not the router because he can also connect through the router. It is definitely something in my computer - maybe fried during the last storm. and after the storm, my DVD player was dead too! I had to buy a new DVD player yesterday.
it's crazy!
it seems like all I do these days is spend money - I took my car to Midas to see if my brakes were okay - and turns out that I had to replace the rear cylinder because brake fluid was leaking! so that was $200 - after my grocery shopping. and now rent is due! I can't seem to save any money!
anyway, I had planned on catching up with LJ last night, and going through my emails too, but I couldn't. I might do some today using the wireless connection. but for the next week I may not use internet so much until I see what the problem is. if there's something I should see or know, please link me - other wise, I'll catch up slowly, but surely.
happy Sunday!!

Oy! All kidding aside, I'm really sorry to hear about this! (I know you've posted after this so I'm hoping you've had some good news on things! I'll be reading your later entries right after this one. ;) ) I know how seriously frustrating that is when you just can't tell what's wrong with a computer!
You did the right things checking with a second computer to see if it could still access the internet okay through the modem and router. However, I've learned the hard way that sometimes that can give you odd results: I've had a router that was starting to fail but hadn't quit completely so it would let one computer on the network connect fine and a second one NOT, even though they were both wired into it at the same time! o_O Also, was the computer on when the storm hit and Comcast went down? Did you lose power, too, at the same time or was it just your provider? Unexpected power loss can sometimes catch the computer in the middle of delicate "thinking" in its registry and cause it to scramble itself. :S
There's actually a ton of things that could've gone wrong, sad to say! Setting it back to an earlier system restore point is a good thing to try, too, as was suggested above! Just be sure if you've recently added any files, pics, music, etc. to your hard drive that it's all backed up because some things will disappear after you reset to an early point like that. ;)
Hopefully you'll be able to get it sorted out! Best of luck! *hugs!*
*runs to read the next post to see what happens* Lol! ;) ♥♥♥!!!

actually the computer wasn't on when the storm hit - it was fine, but just the computer was connected to the router, which was plugged into the outlet that got hit. my DVD player fried too! gotta love lightning storms!
I couldn't go back to an earlier point in the computer system for restoration because the problem is hardware related - I can only fix it by replacing the mother board. which I can't do for cost!!
thanks for your suggestions and your comments:) *hugs tight*
