laurainlimbo: (eternal snow)

nothing much

I sat down to write a really negative message yesterday but decided against posting it. I'm just feeling a bit lonely and worried about the future right now. Things with my husband are fine, and his parents are really great. We're just stressing about money and jobs, and making decisions that are counter to our original plans when we decided to come to Japan. I'll explain more later. For now, I'm applying to lots of jobs, and hoping that something will work out.

I'm surprised to hear myself say this, but I kind of envy all the people who are getting snow. I hated it in Chicago because I had to get out and work and shop in it - and digging out a car is no good. But this time of year, snow is kind of nice, and if we get any at all, it will just be flurries. However, I do feel for all of you in the U.S. east coast area with all the storms. Please stay warm and safe, okay?

Anyway, probably no one cares, but I just read that the sci-fi screenwriter Dan O'Bannon died. Who, you ask? He wrote movies like Alien, Total Recall, Return of the Living Dead and Lifeforce . But he also wrote probably one of the funniest movies ever made, John Carpenter's first low-budget movie called Dark Star . it's probably one of the cheesiest films ever made, and highly worth a watch.

Here's a scene from that movie, in which the main character is trying to fight off the alien, which looks a bit like a giant plastic tomato!

Let's hope things pick up for you in the New Year. My fingers are crossed over here!

We have lots of ice here, but not a lot of snow. The roads and pavements are treacherous...

Fun clip - I've never seen Dark Star. I've heard of it though - must add it to my list of cheesy sci-fi must-sees.

thanks!

ice is sometimes much worse - be careful. I fell on some ice in front of my building last year (in Chicago) and really hurt myself.

oh yes, try to see Dark Star if you can - it's terribly bad, which makes it so good!

I'm glad to hear that things are going okay with your husband and his family, Laura. And I'm keeping good thoughts for you that you're able to land a job soon. I really hope something works out for you very, very soon.

And I thought Ridley Scott wrote Alien? He was just the director?

Hang in there, Laura. *HUGS*

yup Ridley Scott was the director of Alien, and Dan O'Bannon wrote the story. pretty amazing story it was! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078748/

but you should totally see Dark Star!

thanks - things are not bad with hubby and family here. I'm just really anxious about us both getting some work. if we don't then I'll have to return to the U.S. yuck!

*hugs*

My thoughts and prayers are with you that everything works out by the New Year, darling girl. *hugs tight and shares hot-cocoa with you*

Oh I'm so sorry, that's a loss, he was a wonderful writer.

well most likely the jobs will not be solved until after the New Year, but we'll just have to be patient.

thanks for the cocoa and the hugs though!!!

love you lots!

yes the soundtrack is very cheesy - very John Carpenter, similar to his music in Halloween. But I love Carpenter!!

well the best laid plans always change a bit. we're definitely staying on for awhile, but I've got to start making money. My husband is looking for work too but it's grim now. I want the school to work, but there's also a chance we might move from this area in a couple years, so I don't know what to do... lots to think about.

thanks!!!

How's your job hunting going? Don't beat yourself down and don't let them beat you up either! ^_^ You've got the smarts and experience! I'm sure something will work out!

well at this point, the job hunting is slow - nothing is happening. i've got my name into many places, but with the NY holiday, I need to just wait and be patient. I'll follow up in January. I did contact one place that recruits for private school teachers, but they don't have openings in my area. I can go to Tokyo for an interview though and if something comes up, they'll contact me. I would like to take a trip to Tokyo, so I'll probably do that in a couple weeks.

thanks! I hope something comes up soon.

With new year's just around the corner, things are sure to slow down. But it sounds like you got one foot in a lot of places. I'm sure something will turn up after New Year's. Keep it up, Laura! ^_^

I hope something turns up too!! money is going to run out soon:(

thanks!

How much longer can you hold out? Don't worry too much, Laura. Something will surely turn up in time!

oh I'm not going to be homeless or anything. but I have a student loan in the states, and might have to put it on hold for awhile if I can't start earning some money soon. I'm sure I'll find something though, you're right!

=) I know you will.
