While I'm waiting for some shows to download, I thought I'd do a quick post. My computer is quickly starting to overheat, so this may be brief...

The weather continues to be hot here. Next week is the first of October - isn't summer supposed to be over? Sometimes I feel like I'm being tested way beyond my limits of patience and perseverance. And I'm starting to crave foods that I can't get here in Fuji - foods like fish and chips, and ravioli, and lasagna and Thai and Indian food...

It's pretty easy to see that if I start to make lists of the pros and cons of living in Japan, the cons far outweigh the pros... of course at the moment, the pros are having both income and health insurance - things that I will lose the instant that I return to the U.S.

but I'm not here to bore you with my problems and my complaints. I'm here to discuss something far more shallow (but fun): TV and Movies!

First TV. I'm patiently waiting for all my favorite shows to start, meanwhile catching up on White Collar (which apparently is on hiatus until January), and watching the first season of Legend of the Seeker . And since I was bored, and caught up on most everything else, I finally watched the first episode of Chuck last night, and I'm already hooked! I know - I'm very very late to the party! But now I see why this show is so popular - it's brilliant!

And of course all my shows are starting at exactly the same time that I'm returning to work - which means that when I am home I will not only be making lesson plans, but downloading and watching about 5 shows a week, plus trying to watch the first three seasons of Chuck . But since I have no life, then I can live vicariously through my shows...

And now to movies. Of course being here in Fuji, I can't watch movies in real life either. I'm resigned to watching them when they have been released on DVD or somehow finding a download (usually some terrible cam version) on the internet. I'm still waiting for a decent download of Inception since I didn't manage to see it in the theater when I visited the U.S. this summer. I've been interested in some of the movies that are coming out soon, especially the following:

The Fighter - starring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg (and Amy Adams, who I adore). This looks really amazing, especially since Christian Bale supposedly lost a bunch of weight to prepare for the role (just like he did for The Machinist ), proving what an amazing method actor he can be!

Love and Other Drugs - starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway
It's a romantic comedy about the pharmaceutical industry (apparently Jake's selling Viagra!), and it looks a bit cheesy I admit... but Jake looks adorable. And it's good to see him with Anne Hathaway again (they were together awhile back in Brokeback Mountain). She's always a pleasure to watch.

The Tourist - with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie
I have to admit, I'm against this movie in so many ways, but I will still be intrigued to see it. First, I don't like Angelina Jolie. I'm sorry but she just bugs me, even if she has proven to be a good actress. I can't see her and Johnny Depp together in any way, shape or form - and especially not romantically. And second, Johnny has definitely seen better days - he is starting to look far too eccentric and haggard for my taste. Third, this movie just seems to be so unoriginal - it's definitely a rip off of North By Northwest and Silver Streak - both of which are about a man who meets a beautiful stranger on a train (or elsewhere), and who get mistaken for someone else and then have bad guys after them. It's been done before. I just wonder how good Johnny is at playing a plain old regular guy.

And finally, I'm very interested to see Woody Allen's new film called You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger - it stars Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts and Josh Brolin. Woody continues to make quirky and original films even into his 70s, and I will always be a fan!
This one again deals with marriage, infidelity and divorce - territories Woody has dealt with often. But for fans, I'm sure it will be fun! (oh and it also has Antonio Banderas and Frieda Pinto - very interesting!)

Thanks for indulging me and sorry for all the clutter on your friend's pages... hope you enjoyed those trailers though.

I'm off now - gotta turn off my computer before it spontaneously goes up in flames!

I know it isn't an option right now, but almost all of those foods are quite available in Tokyo. I dunno so much on the lasagna and ravioli and basically anything cheese-related, but Engrish Pubs and Indian places and Thai places are fairly plentiful here.

yes I'm sure that if I lived in any big city in Japan, even in Shizuoka, I could get lots of good food. I remember in Nagoya during my orientation, we got really good Indian food. and I had some Thai food in Shizuoka - I know there used to be an Indonesian restaurant there too. There is an Indian restaurant in Fuji, near the station, but as I don't drive, and don't live anywhere near a station, I'm really stuck. And right now I've been house-bound with this broken foot, so going out isn't much of a possibility. I'm just feeling sorry for myself - I hate where I live. I'd really love to be nearer to Tokyo or Yokohama or Nagoya.

p.s. - I'm assuming your misspelling of English (Engrish) was intentional? I remember seeing an English pub right near the station in Shibuya, and I wanted to go there. Perhaps I'll go when I visit the embassy next month.

Yeah, it was intentional :)
There's an English pub chain here called the Hub... they are actually a fairly reasonable facsimile of a real English pub, and they have fish'n'chips and such, and big TVs that show sporting events. But since they are still distinctly Japanese I like to call them the Engrish Pub chain.

There are great things about being in Tokyo, to be sure. I always have thoughts like "Would it be better to be in the inaka?" but I'm pretty sure that no, it wouldn't. Not without reasonable support, at least.

well I wouldn't be able to live here in this part of Fuji without my husband - there's no way to get anywhere without a car. there are buses, which I take to work, but to get to the main train station, which would connect me to the rest of Japan, I'd have to take a bus and a smaller train, and it would probably take over an hour. It's not a convenient area. I've always wondered what it would be like to live in a big city in Japan - I'm sure it would be fun for some things, like shopping and restaurants. but of course you might miss nature and quiet. I'd rather live in either extreme though - either very very inaka, where it's totally quiet and peaceful (and thus far from anywhere), or totally urban where I'm a few minutes away from a station and lots of things to do. Where I live is far from anything to do, but still has the noise and crowds of a city. it's weird.

Sorry you are craving foods you can't have ::hugs::

Yay for catching up on tv shows

Thanks for posting the trailers, they look fun

oh that's ok. I will survive without fish and chips and without lasagna. Probably stay thinner this way - LOL!

Yes, I won't have much time to watch tv shows after I go back to work next week. Two months will be very busy - work every day!

you're welcome - glad you enjoyed the trailers. I hope I can see all these movies!

You never watched Chuck? Ooh, it's cute!

And we have Captain Awesome and Lester coming to our convention next June. ;-)

The Fighter - looks like Rocky! Amy Adams is usually good though.

Love and Other Drugs - I'd need to know it was a happy ending before I went to see it. Lol. I'm a wuss.

The Tourist - yes, a rerun. But I love Johnny, and I think he looks amazing. He's NOT haggard - he's only 2 years older than me! And love her or hate her, Angelina is mesmerizing on screen.

That new Woody Allen looks fun - lots of great people in that, including an EX-Welshman! Lol.

don't get me wrong - I still love Johnny. and age has nothing to do with the way he looks. I just don't like this current look. I prefer him in Chocolat or Don Juan DeMarco - when he was much more romantic and sexy. just my own preference:)

and Angelina - hm, well she is one of a kind I will admit that.
I still don't like her.

maybe The Fighter looks like Rocky, but I still love Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg and will see it for them. and for Amy!

yep - I'm late to the Chuck bandwagon - there's so so many shows I haven't seen. but it's never too late to start watching. finished episode 2 today!

Chocolat - rawr!

We're on Season 3 of Chuck here. Won't take you long to catch up.

well I'm still only on the fourth episode or so... of season 1. I won't have much time to catch up after I go back to work sadly. plus I'll be trying to keep up with new seasons of my regular shows - that's 5-6 shows a week. phew!

aaww did you like LOTS then? Season 2 is even better with the addition of a character named Cara...

YAY for finding Chuck, The gang are so great and the season 3 opener is one of my favs...

I too am intrigued by The Tourist, I love both actors have to say, but am concerned this isnt going to be great :(

Also I really wanna see love and other drugs, they were so good together in BBM and still two of my favourite actors!

I'm still getting through season 1 of LOTS. I've been so busy watching other shows, I just haven't caught up. but I do like it a lot! can't wait to get to Season 2!

so far I just love Chuck - I remember reading your posts about it awhile back and wondering... I should have started watching it awhile back. But it's never too late.

Yes The Tourist has potential, but that trailer is not so impressive. we'll see how good it is.

I love Jake and Anne both - I think it will be a fun movie to watch!

I'm almost done with season 1 - so I have a lot to catch up on! but I am loving it more and more all the time! and my husband loves it too!

I need a chuck/sarah icon too!

Looking forward to the Fighter despite the presence of Mark Wahlberg. Christian is always fun to watch, and I like sports movies. The original Rocky is the standard but this looks good.

Love and Other Drugs I will pass on because the trailer just makes me go ugh. I think I'll wait for someone I know to see it and see what they think. Because sometimes trailers don't showcase a film well. Which is a shame because I have wanted to see Anne and Jake together again. Maybe they'll do something else.

The Tourist has me totally excited. It's going to be my popcorn movie. I think 90% of thrillers are predictable by nature, it's the execution that makes it work or not. I love Johnny and we we all get old, my love of him really is about what he does on screen. I've always said he could be old fat and bald and I would still see him anything. I like Angie's yet to disappoint me in a movie and man is she stunning.

I have a love hate thing with Woody Allen. I feel like hist last few films have been at least for me up and down in terms of quality. Also I know I am the only person on Earth who thinks it but for me Naomi's performances, and somehow I manage to see most of her movies go figure, always lack an emotional engagement. She always leaves me cold, and i try so hard to like her, but we just don't connect. I mean she seems perfectly lovely in interviews and I like her,but . . .

Oh have you seen the trailer for For Colored Girls. I'm not a fan of the director but he cast is stellar and the play is brilliant, so it looks like it will be a good one.

oh you don't like Marky Mark? I think he's definitely easy on the eyes, and not a bad actor. I do like sports movies if they're done well. Raging Bull and Rocky were always my favorites.

I agree with you about the trailer for Love and Other Drugs - it looks a tad cheesy. But I'm such a sucker for Jake that I know I need to see it just for him. he looks adorable!

I also agree with you 100 percent about Johnny. I don't think that he looks bad, but I just don't particularly like this look with the long hair and beard. I like him more clean-shaven. just my preference. He's almost always enjoyable on the screen - though I hated him in Alice and in Willy Wonka. those were frightening!

Woody Allen's latest movies have not been as strong, you are right. But I am a big fan, and I pretty much like whatever he's done. He's just always original and always has his muse - it was Scarlett for awhile, maybe now it's Naomi Watts. Who knows. Naomi can be a bit flat, but I do like her. Did you see Mulholland Drive (David Lynch)? I like her in that quite a bit. Also I liked her in Stay with Ryan Gosling and Ewan McGregor.

I did see the trailer for Colored Girls and it looks very good. great cast for sure!

lots of good movies to see ... wish I lived back in the states right now.

I don't dislike Mark so much as i find his acting skills unpredictable. I also tend to compare him to his bro, which isn't fair. Donnie is really good.

Yeah a lot of people don't like the beard. Alice and Willy Wonka were not very good, I do agree.

I'm like that about David Lynch as far as being a fan of even his less strong work. So I can relate. Mulholland Drive is the only movie I like her in. That is a fantastic film. So she can act it's just that most of the time her lightening doesn't hit the ground. I want to see her at the Mulholland level of quality again. I think that's why I keep seeing her movies.

I'm sure some of the movies will make to Japan and I bet there are some excellent Japanese movies :)

posted by [identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com at 12:46am on 03/10/2010
hm I'm not even familiar with Mark's brother Donnie as an actor. I'll have to see one of his film. any recommendations?

I love David Lynch! and I do think that Mulholland Drive is his best, and that Naomi is excellent in it. I just rewatched it the other day - it's always mesmerizing.

oh I'm sure there are some excellent Japanese movies, but without subtitles I can't understand them. My Japanese language skills are terrible. It's actually better for me to watch Japanese films in America, so I can get the subtitles.

I empathise on the overheating laptop now I'm demoted back to my old laptop I'm constantly worried it's about to overheat.

I'm not sure what TV shows are back yet, I'm reliant on Phil giving me the downloads and until they start flowing in I don't know what I'm expecting!

Those films look and sound interesting, and have great casts!

I may have to keep a schedule for my tv downloading, since I have so many I'm doing now. And I'm still trying to get caught up on some old shows like Chuck and LOTS. so I'm busy - LOL! busy escaping from my humdrum existence into the lives of people far more interesting.

yes I think those are some of the great batch of movies coming up. I wish I could go and see movies more readily. soon anyway!

I still have to catch up on White Collar too! I haven't seen any episodes of season 2 yet... And how is Legend of the Seeker? I haven't watched it at all, are you finding it entertaining? :)

posted by [identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com at 09:38am on 23/09/2010
White Collar continues to be very good. I enjoy it!! Legend of the Seeker is pretty good - though I've only watched about six episodes of season 1. It's definitely cheesy, but very entertaining if you like sword fighting and stuff about magic. It's not quite on par with Merlin as far as quality, but it is fun. and if you like very cute (and often shirtless) men, then you'd like the lead guy, Craig Horner. He's very easy on the eyes! Check it out!!

by the way, did you ever get a chance to do that actor meme? I was curious to see your answers:)

You do watch quite the wide array of television don't you? Lots of different things on your schedule! Legend of the Seeker? Really? lol.... That just doesn't strike me as "you". lol...

The Fighter looks like a good movie... and so does Love and Other Drugs. Of course, I could watch Anne Hathaway alllllllllllllllll day long. :-p

Thanks for posting the clips!!!

I hope your computer didn't go up in flames, Laura!!!
