I was having a conversation with [personal profile] wolfpurplemoon (well it was here on LJ, but still nonetheless resembling a conversation) the other day about the current Hollywood vampire band-wagon. Everywhere you look there's new vampire movies, remakes of movies, or tv shows shows, most spawing from books or series of books about the sexy supernatural beings. both of us decided that we weren't complaining about all the movies and shows - I for one have had a fascination with vampires since I was old enough to watch the 1979 version of Dracula with Frank Langella - and then there was The Hunger and Fright Night, and The Lost Boys and Near Dark... all great movies. And then there was the remake of the series Dark Shadows back in 1991 -I used to videotape those religiously - I thought vampires were so romantic. I wasn't a huge fan of Anne Rice - I tried reading the books and was bored to tears. The Interview with the Vampire also bored me - and Tom Cruise as a vampire - yuck!

Flash forward to now: I know that Twilight (which may be the cause of all this recent vampire hype) will have a movie sequel soon, there's a new movie version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer coming, True Blood season 2 starts this weekend (yay!!!), and Vampire Diaries will be starting soon on the CW. And there's a remake planned of the movie I reviewed the other day, Let the Right One In . Hollywood can't just leave a good thing alone. is all this hollywood vampire hype too much? Does it make it fun anymore for all us gothic vampire lovers??

and now... just this morning I hear that Johnny Depp has been chosen for yet another Dark Shadows remake, this time a movie with Tim Burton directing. but will it work? Is Johnny Depp the right guy to play Barnabas Collins? does anyone remember the original Dark Shadows series, that aired from 1966 to 1971? It was a serial - a daily show, not even a weekly show. Can they take this concept and put it into a 2-hour movie? again don't get me wrong - I loved the Dark Shadows tv show, with Ben Cross as Barnabas Collins. My mom was a fan of the original series too!
I'm a sucker for gothic, old-fashioned vampire stories - I love dark, scary castles, and fog, and Victorian-era fashions. I don't really like vampire stories set in modern high school halls. And Johnny Depp as a vampire - now that would be hot! could be interesting to see how this pans out.

And now for something completely different - I watched the movie Lars and the Real Girl last night and loved it!

Basically, it's about a guy and his doll. More specifically, a very shy guy named Lars (played by Ryan Gosling in a perfect performance) who has trouble connecting to people, forms a relationship with a life-like doll he buys on the internet. Sounds crazy, but it's one of the sweetest, funniest movies I've seen in a long time. Both of Lars' parents are gone, and he lives alone in the garage of his brother and sister-in-law's home. He has a job, and seems to be a functioning adult. But he's painfully shy and afraid of human contact. His pregnant sister-in-law Karin (played by an absolutely loveable and adorable Emily Morimer) is worried that Lars spends too much time alone, so she invites him for breakfast and dinner and dotes on him. His brother Gus thinks that Lars just wants to be left alone. They are both thrilled to find out that Lars has a new friend. But when Lars brings his new "girlfriend" Bianca to meet Gus and Karin, they must then figure out how to deal with Lars's delusion, and soon the whole town is treating Bianca as if she's the real deal.

what works about this movie is not just the story, which at face value might seem laughable. But it's the deeper ideas, of learning to love and be loved, and also learning to accept people for who they are. Poor Lars never had any affection as a child, and he's never learned how to really connect with anyone. While most guys buy life-sized dolls for sex companions, sweet Lars won't even share a bed with Bianca in the beginning. Bianca is more than just a companion for him; she's a lesson in how to love someone. She teaches Lars so much about accepting people, and in the process, others learn a lot from Lars and Bianca's relationship. The other thing that works is the characters, and the performances. It's such a simple plot, but the characters are complex, and Ryan especially does such a fantastic job of playing the delusional guy, who has no idea that Bianca is a delusion. To him she's more real than any living creature. it's an amazing performance - he sings, he cries.. he's just great! I don't want to give away too many more details - because I recommend this movie highly!

I can never get too much of vampires... love it. Shame they cancelled Moonlight - I was enjoying that.

I've seen a couple of episodes of True Blood now, and I can't wait for us to get it over here!

Not come across Dark Shadows though. I'll have to look out for that one.

I remember reading about Lars when it came out - looked like fun!

I never heard of Moonlight - but it must have been cancelled before the current vampire hype hit. otherwise, it may have continued. I'll have to look those up:)

here's info on the old 1966 show: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Shadows

and on the 1991 remake (which I watched) with Ben Cross: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101075/
I can't find it on wikipedia

See Lars -it's awesome!

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] toadflax234, Moonlight was superb! It was part of the supernatural private detective mini-craze, which included Angel and The Dresden Files, but that bubble must've burst cos DF and Moonlight got cancelled after one season!

Moonlight was on last season which was a crappy time for new shows. The ironic thing is that they replaced it with another show starring Elisabeth Reaser (spelling?) and the vampire magic certainly didn't help her since it came and went in the blink of an eye although it wasn't a vampire show. Well at least she still has the the other Twilight saga movies to do if they do all four of them.

I'm sure I had an intelligent reply coming but then you said Johnny Depp and vampire in the same sentence and my brain broke. And with Tim Burton directing, they'll definitely have the gothic credentials to carry it off!

yea can you believe it? I don't care an iota about Twilight and the other high school clones, but this is gothic at it's best! I've always imagined Johnny as a vampire - *swoons*

Oh good I was wondering when True Blood starts. As for the Buffy movie I did rant about that a bit on my blog. How often does a remake actually work? This one is going to be a horror show. There's a rumor about some chick I've never heard of that's supposed to play Buffy and she looks like a porn star. Maybe they're going the porno route? That is just so wrong. There should be a fundraiser so Joss can get the rights back to Buffy after all he should own his own creation.

At least they waited before doing anything with Dark Shadows. I watched the 91 version too. I've caught some of the original one since I've been able to get it from the library and for a while they aired it on SciFi. I think Johnny would be hot as a vampire. The original guy just didn't do it for me as a vampire although I liked the character. Now that was something to mock and laugh at because it was pretty silly.

I'm not a big fan of remakes in general, and i think this Buffy one is a bad idea. But what can we do?

Dark Shadows would be interesting as a movie, though it will be basically just using the characters and setting - they can't squeeze all the original shows into 2 hours. I imagine those really old Dark Shadows are a bit cheesy by today's standards. did you see the 1991 remake of the shows? it was good from what I remember.

I saw who is supposed to be playing Buffy and it looked like more of a porno than Buffy. I don't even know this chick from a hole in the ground but I think it was Megan Fox or something. And the idiot doesn't want Joss involved. Why so soon? Lots of remakes at least wait a decade or two before doing the remake. Now I wouldn't be opposed to one that had the verse minus Buffy since there are other Slayers now but Buffy without her Scoobies is just stupid.

I haven't seen all of it because that was before I was alive but some of it is cheesy and it takes so long for Barnabus to show up. Yeah I have the other Dark Shadows on DVD. I love Michael and wish he'd come back to Days because it would be great to see him on something again. It was good and Barnabus showed up pretty fast and unless I've gone insane which is quite possibel I could swear that Joss is in a funeral scene. It is very fast but I think it could be him.

omg really Megan Fox?? I can't stand her! well I guess that's a movie to avoid.
and I agree that they should wait to do a remake - the other Buffy series is too fresh in people's minds. it's all very silly!

I follow Buffyfest over at my blog and found a link to a post and it was her although I have no idea who the hell she is. The guy's just an idiot out to make money. Buffy is still too new and in a weird backwards sort of way there was already sort of a remake. At least Friday The Thirteenth remake came out over twenty years later although I wonder about Nightmare On Elm Street. Who in the world could top Freddy? Jason's easy to cast just get a big stuntguy and put a mask on him along with some weapon and voila but Freddy had character and I can't imagine anyone but Robert playing him although that did kind of destroy his chances at a career beyond that.

I can't imagine anyone else playing Freddy either - Robert Englund was perfect. I don't like any remakes, but that one really will not be any good.

I loved watching Dark Shadows reruns with my mom back in the day. I didn't really understand it (wee bit young), but it was so pretty to look at.

I, for one, was never that interested in vampires. They're just, there. I guess. Like any other mythical creature.

I've never really been a fan of vampire-related stuff, although, I've always loved the original Buffy movie with Kristy Swanson (and I'm not pleased that they are going to remake it!) I never got into the Buffy TV show, though.

But I did finally watch Twilight the other night, and I was really surprised by how much I liked it! And I know a lot of people hate it and all the related hype, but I really enjoyed it and am actually looking forward to the sequel. I'm going to give the books a shot, too.

Re: Dark Shadows. I'm not familiar with the original TV show but, oh, did I LOL over the fact that it's yet another Depp/Burton collaboration. I mean, is it possible for Burton to do a movie without Johnny Depp?? Jeeez. Anyway, I hope for your sake that they manage to do it justice! :-)

actually after I watched Twilight for the first time I really liked it too. And it's not a terrible movie. I'm not one of the absolute haters, but I prefer vampire movies either with more adult themes, or with more sarcasm (like the first Buffy movie, which I also loved!) - I love your icon by the way!! I never got into the Buffy tv show either, wonder why... anyway, I do think that if anyone can pull off a remake of something gothic like Dark Shadows, it will be Tim Burton. and with Johnny Depp it should be easy on the eyes! wonder who they'll cast as his love interest - would have to be someone dark haired and gorgeous... Jennifer Connelly??

posted by [identity profile] winterdahlia.livejournal.com at 02:16am on 12/06/2009
Oooh, Jennifer Connelly and Johnny Depp in love--I would definitely watch that! YES. :-D

Re: Twilight...I was so surprised that I actually liked it because I was so prepared to loathe it. And it's definitely got its flaws, but I just loved the setting and the cinematography and just the whole feel of the movie. I actually just started reading the first book and I already see why some have said it's not very well written. But I'm just going to enjoy it for what it is...definitely not great literature but a good page-turner! :-)

I wasn't really sure if I'd like Twilight - I was just curious. you know that it's set (and partially filmed) in Forks, Washington, which is just 45 minutes from where my parents live in northwestern WA. I've been through there a few times. the northwest is very beautiful and is a great place for an atmospheric movie like Twilight - I do have to give them credit for that.

I've been wanting to read the books too - also out of curiosity. hope you enjoy them:)

I am totally NOT a fan of anything to with vampires. Never watched any TV series about them and try to avoid movies. I did go and see Let the Right One In, but actually wished I hadn't.
Horror is not for me :)

I have always loved vampire stories that were more gothic and atmospheric - not necessarily the bloody or scary ones. I love the traditional Dracula story, or Dark Shadows - those were not so much really horror films (at least for me). Let the Right One In was definitely a creepy film, which I don't mind, but I can see how it wouldn't appeal to lots of people. my husband would hate it too - he hates any horror films. for some reason, horror films don't bother me, I guess because I had older siblings who were into them, and I grew up watching them. but I have pretty eclectic taste - I love happy feel-good movies too:)

you'll love Lars - it's a feel good movie!

It's kind of funny, I CAN'T STAND VAMPIRES in a really big way, and the whole hype just annoys me- and yet, one of my favorite shows of all time is Buffy :P

And I'm sure the remake movie is going to be awful (because I've heard they're not bringing back anyone from the original cast?) but I can't wait to see it anyway :P

there is a lot of hype lately about vampires, but I guess I don't mind because I like vampire stuff. and isn't it funny that I never really got into the Buffy tv show. I watched it a few times, and it was fun - but I just didn't get hooked. I liked the original Buffy movie though:)

yea I don't think anyone's too thrilled about the upcoming remake but I guess the makers felt they could just use all this hype and make some money:)
