bad movie, bad bad bad!!

I really need to stop ordering bad movies from Netflix. Last night I watched (or should I say I tried to watch) the remake of Journey to the Center of the Earth . so you're asking, why on earth did I rent that silly mess? Good question... I can't even remember why I put it on my queue.
I guess the trailer made it look Jurassic park-like and fun... I didn't even get to the fun part, if there was any. I turned it off after about 40 minutes, after it started resembling the second Indiana Jones movie (and not a good resemblance). Brendan Fraser really needs to start making good movies again - he's starting to get typecast as the nerdy professor-action hero type after all the Mummy movies. In this movie he was so uninspired, and the actress playing the Icelandic guide was horribly annoying. and the special effects were just a joke. I felt like I was watching a movie made by a teenager!

I think it's really time to put my Netflix membership on hold. I just can't find anything worth renting anymore...

and speaking of movies, I'm not sure if I'll even watch the Academy Awards this year. (I think I might have said the same thing last year, and ended up watching only half of the awards then)... Honestly I don't care anymore, and that makes me so sad. I might watch simply to see Hugh Jackman as the host(*melt*), and to see the beautiful dresses and the gorgeous men. This is the second year that I haven't seen ANY of the movies up for best picture - and I only care about a few of them. I guess everyone's saying that Benjamin Button is good, but I am not interested. I'm not interested in The Reader. I might see Slumdog Millionaire once it's on DVD. And Frost/Nixon too. of course I really want to see Milk, but it won't win. It's so easy to predict the winners every year - it's all political after all. Ever since Brokeback Mountain lost to Crash a few years back, I just gave up on caring. It's so disappointing.

[identity profile] bitchygrrl.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
No, no there are lots of good movies yet to be watched. Perhaps you could rent some classics for a while. I want to see The Reader but it isn't at the top of my list. Benjamin Button was good not great. I'm disappointed Revolutionary Road didn't really do much. I'm wish Slumdog had gotten some acting noms, that said it's nice to see a film like Slumdog nominated.
I had the exact opposite reaction to the Crash v Brokeback thing. *lol* I think it is the case with both od those movies though that people have very definite feelings about them.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
someone else suggested I rent classics too- that's a good plan:) at least until some of the newer stuff is released on DVD and is not too popular to rent. like I said to someone else, I did like the movie Crash. It was powerful and well acted and deserving. but I just felt that Brokeback deserved the Oscar more. artistically it was just a gorgeous film, and politically it deserved more.

[identity profile] bitchygrrl.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
*headesk* I thought you meant the directing award for some reason and not best picture. I love Brokeback Mountain and I don't like Crash, I will skip the rant on why. I think people felt they had to give Crash something. Also I use blockbuster online and they seem to be quicker than netflix who I used to have.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
no worries - I didn't even remember about the directing award. I know lots of people didn't like Crash. I liked it the first time, but not in subsequent viewings. it was a little too simple.

I've heard Blockbuster online is better - I might try that once I move.

[identity profile] bitchygrrl.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, overly simplistic is exactly the problem with Crash.
Blockbuster online is good and if you have a Blockbuster near you you can drop off there and get a free instore rental.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
wonder if I can get In Bruges from Blockbuster. it's still on long wait status - I think some copies have been stolen or something, seriously!

[identity profile] bitchygrrl.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It says long waits at Blockbuster too, I just checked. It's weird though I have only ever had long wait on one movie at Blockbuster.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
yea I'm not sure why this movie is so hard to get right now.

[identity profile] bitchygrrl.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's getting word of mouth buzz. It was in at the video store though they only had a few copies in stock.

[identity profile] bitterbird.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Milk is awesome, it deserves more credit then it will get

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't wait to see it!!

[identity profile] dove95.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I saw Slumdog Millionaire last night with the bf, and I can't get it out of my head. I thought it was so good, I wish I had seen it before now.

I have a ton of movies in my queue that I should watch. I watched Year of the Dog this weekend, and I was really disappointed in that. I thought it was good for about the first half, and then the second just went somewhere crazy for the sake of it.

I also watched Meet Bill, and I thought that was decent and cute. Nothing too original, but I liked it.

I guess it's like with music... you just have to know where to look and go with recommendations from people you trust :)

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
that's interesting how you felt about Year of the Dog. it was okay in the beginning, but then fell apart. I want to see Slumdog, but will have to wait, or go to the theater alone - *sigh*

[identity profile] hue126.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, you're like many movie fans with the Oscars. That's what the Academy gets for nominating five small-budget, little-seen, November and December films. Maybe would have had a little bigger of an audience if they nominated more mainstream fare like WALL-E or The Dark Knight for Best Picture.

At this point, it may be Slumdog as the favorite. But they have no acting nominations, which reduces its chances. The Reader is not gonna win. Neither is Frost/Nixon. Benjamin Button is too weird for Academy voters. Milk could win to make up for the injustice that was Brokeback losing to Crash, but the Academy voters are notoriously predictable for its conservatism and its shyness towards gay pictures.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, I find it frustrating that every year, they nominate movies that are just now released in the theater, or between theater and DVD. I'm always scrambling to see them before the awards so that there is some meaning. All the hype and the articles are pointing towards Slumdog winning best picture - and I think I could safely predict the rest of the winners too. there's just not any surprise left in the Oscars anymore.

you're so right about the Academy being biased and conservative. It's so political, like all awards shows. that's its biggest downfall.

[identity profile] phantomsgyrl.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
When Brokeback lost that's when I lost all interest in the Oscars to but I don't care about watching any of the other award shows now either. I'll hear after the fact and if there is one I like i'll give a little cheer or something.

'Slumdog Millionaire' is a great movie. It's quite a journey. I've also seen 'The Reader' and just saw 'Revolutionary Road' - I so love Kate Winslet in both. She's my favorite actress.

Ah, I feel your pain re: the Academy Awards! Like you, I enjoy watching for the beautiful gowns and the beautiful men (yum) :-) but I'm just not excited about them at all. I haven't seen any of the nominated films either, and just as you said, I don't really want to see them, except Milk and possibly The Reader (only because of Kate!) And Crash winning over Brokeback Mountain? Ugh. The Oscars were kind of dead to me after that. I couldn't believe it when that happened!

You might want to give the Indie Spirit Awards a shot (if you get the Independent Film Channel.) They are usually quite fun to watch even if you haven't seen all the films. I think they're on the night before the Oscars.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I do want to watch the Independent Spirit awards - I missed it the last few years since I didn't have that channel, but this year I can see it!
you know, I did like the movie Crash, but I felt it shouldn't have taken the award from Brokeback - it was a really political move, and disappointing. this year, we know it's going to be Slumdog Millionaire for the best picture award, and I guess that's a good thing. But there's no more mystery and surprise with the Oscars anymore.

[identity profile] phantomsgyrl.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Don't be sorry. I loved reading your response.

I have checked out bits and pieces of the ISA since 2006 but I just can't sit through any award show anymore.

Go see 'The Reader.' I will tell you that it is a tearjerker but very good.

[identity profile] winterdahlia.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oops, sorry phantomsgyrl...I meant to reply to Laura's original post!

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll have to see Slumdog - Revolutionary Road is another I want to see and I'm surprised it didn't get any Oscar nods.

[identity profile] phantomsgyrl.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I gotta tell you that 'Revolutionary Road' is intensely sad. It did get a few Oscar nods including best supporting actor (and totally needs to win it). Also, David Harbour who played Randall Malone in BBM is in it.

Michelle

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I really am not even sure what Revolutionary Road is about. but I am hoping to see it.

[identity profile] accordingtolulu.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
there's a lot of awesomeness out there. you can always start rewatching the classics. that's what i'm doing. also there's a lot of great movies that have been made in the last couple of years. plus there's some great tv on dvd. have you seen the fall? you should put that on your queue. john adams is brilliant. it just kind of depends on what you're in the mood for. i love penelope as well. it's quirky and totally adorable. i feel your pain on the journey to the center of the earth, haven't seen that one, but believe when i say: i've seen some pretty terrible movies. don't give up yet though. there's still some great ones out there...

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, I really need to start watching the classics. I just don't know where to begin. I love old movies, so it should be fun:) Yes, I did see the Fall, and I have it on DVD too. I love it!! I want to see more movies like that:) I know I shouldn't give up - I love movies, and just need to see better ones to reaffirm my belief in the joy of cinema again:)
thanks for the comment, and the inspiration!
any suggestions of things you've seen lately?

[identity profile] accordingtolulu.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
i've been watching a lot of TV on DVD. i like How I Met Your Mother and Mad Men. Just watched an old one with Cary Grant called My Favorite Wife that was extremely cute. I love Sabrina(both the old one with Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, and the new one with Julia Ormond and Harrison Ford) Chinatown is a great movie. So is Penelope(it's very much like Pushing Daisies), Cold Comfort Farm is hilarious. Pleasantville is one of my favorites. These are all pretty old except Penelope. However, these might get you started :D by the way, i love your icon

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I love watching whole series of shows on DVD - it's so fun! I did that with Six Feet Under, Dexter, and the first season of Lost. though I gave up on the second season. I just added the movie Penelope to my queue - I'd read about that one awhile back in a magazine. I love christina Ricci. Chinatown is great! I'll have to re-rent Cold Comfort Farm. I tried watching it a few years back and had trouble with the accents, but I know it's supposed to be a great film.

thanks - I can't remember where I found that icon but I got that one, and this one too from the same person. it's so sweet. That movie is so amazing!!

[identity profile] accordingtolulu.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah the Fall is one of the best movies i've seen in awhile. So imaginative, sweet, and beautiful. I have yet to see Dexter, but i've heard nothing but good things about that show! I've just started watching Chuck, but Dexter is on my list as well. There are so many TV shows that I want to see...It's just a matter of getting around to it. Yeah Cold Comfort Farm can be hard to get into because of the accents, but it's a seriously funny movie. You could always try subtitles? That always helps me. Glad you added Penelope. I think you'll really enjoy it :D

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll let you know after I've watched Penelope - it's first on my queue.
I'll add Cold Comfort Farm too - subtitles are really helpful:)

[identity profile] accordingtolulu.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah definetly let me know how you like Penelope :D it's one of my favorites, plus it has a similar visual style to Pushing Daisies, so that makes it even better

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
oh cool - anything similar to Pushing Daisies would be good for me:)

[identity profile] nekosensei.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm...are you just limiting yourself to American movies? What about checking out some foreign films?

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
oh no, I'm not limiting myself, but I can just never think what to rent:) It's like the days when I used to go record shopping as a teenager, and as soon as I got to the store, I couldn't think what I wanted. When I go to Netflix to add stuff to my queue, I can't think what I want to see, or what's good. if you have any suggestions, I'd love them:)

Journey did look like fun, but it's not on my must-see list. I was so disappointed by the latest Mummy film though - but that wasn't Brendan's fault.

I haven't seen any of the Oscar movies either - don't really want to this year. I don't usually watch the whole ceremony - it's on in the middle of the night over here - I sometimes watch the highlights. Hugh Jackman is a big draw though - WUFF!

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
well I was frustrated with In Bruges not being available, so I moved some stuff around on my netflix queue, and got Journey . it might be good with younger kids, but for me it was just silly. I know Brendan's such a good actor, I just wish he'd choose better roles, but perhaps he likes these fun ones.

I haven't watched the whole Oscars ceremony in a few years. the year that Brokeback and Crash were up against each other, i was actually in Japan and had my mom tape it and send it to me. but if I were in Japan this year, I don't think I'd care as much. it's sad that so many films haven't even been released yet to DVD so I can't see them before Oscar day.

[identity profile] toadflax234.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
In Bruges is on my rental list too - Phil took me there for my 40th birthday (coz of the lace and chocolates. Lol!). It looks like a great film though.

I always get cross that we have to wait so much longer than you, for films in the cinema and the DVDs.

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
see that's how sadly sheltered I am, I didn't even realize that Bruges was a town. IN fact I wasn't sure what the movie's title even meant.
sounds so romantic, lace and chocolate:)

[identity profile] toadflax234.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Bruges is beautiful - and famous for beer (scrummy - and strong!), lacemaking and chocolates. I'd recommend it!

It is - we had a lovely weekend.

[identity profile] kookymorgan.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I find the oscars and similar awards shows interesting, but in reality they hold little meaning other than if the Brits win - very patriotic you see...

I HOPE WINSLET wins as she is well overdue...

Benjamin Button was a wonderful film - I loved it and not just because of Brad or indeed Cate, I am a firm fan of Fincher I think he is great...

Slumdog I also found to be an incredible film and one that you learn from, aware of certain facts about india but not all so it entertains on so many levels.. I hope its the little film that could I really do!

Milk I have yet to see but have acquired it, Penn is a genius and I hope he wins, then again I think he has enough accolades so it would be nice for Brad .....

yeh Hugh Jackmen mmmmmmmmmm YUM!

[identity profile] laurainlimbo.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I do hope Kate Winslet wins - she so deserves any prize, she's wonderful:) I want to see Slumdog and Milk but they're both in the theaters and playing in limited places near me. maybe I can see them somehow in the next few weeks.
perhaps I should see Benjamin Button - I know that Fincher directed it, and I'm a fan of his too. I'll give it a chance:)

p.s. I love your icon - I did watch Wall-E and enjoyed it. might want to watch it again as it was a bit hectic towards the end.

[identity profile] kookymorgan.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see the forrest gump comparisons with B Button, I love both films - I just I dont know its amazing how they got Brads face morphed on the early character and well actually all the way through! I guess thats the gimic bit - theres just so much better acting I think.. only slightly....

I think its worth a watch I really do.....

And yeh GO KATE GO KATE!!
